Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine announced Thursday that Dr. Amy Acton was stepping down as director of the Ohio Department of Health and that Lance Himes will take over as interim director.
The transition will be immediate, Acton said.
Himes has been serving as general counsel for the department, where he has worked for over 15 years.
In 2017, Gov. John Kasich appointed Himes to lead the Department of Health.
According to the department’s website: “Himes’s legal work focused primarily on environmental health and compliance issues. One of his chief accomplishments was the successful legal implementation of Ohio’s smoke-free workplace law and rules. He also played a leading role in an extensive overhaul of Ohio’s sewage treatment regulations; helping reform a set of laws that had not been updated since 1977.”
