Edison Light Bulb

By January 1879, at his laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, Edison had built his first high resistance, incandescent electric light. It worked by passing electricity through a thin platinum filament in the glass vacuum bulb, which delayed the filament from melting. Still, the lamp only burned for a few short hours.

Edison Light Bulb

Edison decided to try a carbonized cotton thread filament. When voltage was applied to the completed bulb, it began to radiate a soft orange glow. Just about fifteen hours later, the filament finally burned out. Further experimentation produced filaments that could burn longer and longer with each test.

Edison invested the light bulb in 1879 but continued working to extend the life of the filament.Edison started to focus on carbonized filaments.

Biden is confused twith he role of Lewis Latimer who filed a patent on January 17, 1882 for the "Process of Manufacturing Carbons", an improved method for the PRODUCTION of lightbulb carbon filaments. Latimer did not invent the carbon filament but he did file a patent for an IMPROVED METHOD OF PRODUCTION.

The Edison Electric Light Company in New York City actually hired Latimer in 1884, as a draftsman and an expert witness in patent litigation on electric lights.
