He was a person of interest and an accused murderer on state charges. He may also have been subject of Fed investigation on domestic terrorism by way of how the murder happened and other associative ties. That may have been enough to legally put the Feds into the picture. He was in big trouble and he knew it. Handlers told him "Go out on your own or we will make your life 10xs worse than your death."
