Anyone seen any numbers which would indicate how many of those sales (584,000 guns between May 1 and July 31) were to FIRST TIME gun purchasers.

IV techs do that with elderly patients whose veins have weakened to the point that the usual choice (a somewhat-larger vein in the crook of the elbow) will not work.
There's usually some blood leakage into the hand tissue around the entry point when starting a line in the hand.
