You should also get trained with the shot gun. Although the sight of one will scare the fuck out of anyone in front of it, you need to know how to use it. Much easier than a handgun IMHO.
Hand guns are tricky little bitches these days. You need to know how to handle them, load them, maintain them, and do that all safely.
My biggest fear with all these first time purchases is that the only experience the purchasers have with guns is pressing "R" for reload, and "RT Mouse" to shoot. That's not reassuring. Most accidents occur during cleaning because the owner didn't follow procedure.
