Allow me to suggest a smaller shotgun ... the lowly .410. There are personal defense shells (Winchester Super X Predator) loaded with 5 pellets of 000 buck, which is the same diameter as a 9mm bullet. The .410 delivers them at full 9mm speeds into an area about the size of a human palm at the longest distance I have in my home ... 28ft down a hallway. Up closer, they are just more tightly packed. They are non-negotiable.
