The cold air temperature increases the body’s cortisol release from adrenal glands. Cortisol is a steroid stress hormone. It’s receptor binds cortisol and once bound the complex travels to the cell nucleus and activates expression of many gene products (probably suppresses some too). Interestingly enough the cell surface protein used by rhinovirus as a receptor is unregulated by cortisol.
