They protected the protesters even when they turned violent, but the protesters forced the Chief to resign, and the Mayor may be next. One of the key funding mechanisms of the left is taking federal largesse and washing it through planned parenthood to raise up local lefties that can arrive to a ballot for state office. After that, unions step up for the extra push a governor or legislator run needs. Staying local keeps things out of national press for the most part.
Personally, I think international unions [such as SEIU] should be fully barred from lobbying any part of the US government: from your lowly city tax assessor to high office. To that end, they shouldn't be allowed to represent employees involved in state contracts either, as that turns into lobbying/leveraging without blinking.
