Freemasonry was infiltrated in the late 18th/early 19th centuries by European Illuminism.
John Robison wrote a book about it in 1798 (iirc): Proofs of a Conspiracy, which was sent to Washington and Jefferson. I think the Founders failed to appreciate the threat posed by the radicals, notwithstanding what was then taking place in France.
But the Founders’ FM was essentially of the English, pre-Weishaupt, variety, of which Robison had been an adherent.
