Six jail inmates and six employees in Travis County on Monday were confirmed to have COVID-19, the disease linked to the coronavirus, the Travis County sheriff’s office said.
Two inmates were already quarantined, two were in isolation and two came into custody with COVID-19, according to the sheriff’s office, which runs the county’s detention facilities.
Three of the diagnosed inmates have bonded out of jail. The rest are being housed in a quarantine unit for inmates diagnosed with COVID-19.
In addition to the inmates, six Travis County sheriff’s office employees in the Corrections Bureau and in the Administration Bureau were diagnosed with COVID-19.
As of Monday, 16 inmates were being quarantined and 228 were in isolation. A total of 1,770 inmates were being housed in a Travis County jail on Monday.
The first inmate to test positive for the coronavirus was confirmed on May 28. So far during the pandemic, 251 inmates have been tested for the coronavirus. Nine tests have come back positive, and seven were still pending on Monday.
A total of 140 sheriff’s office employees have been tested for the coronavirus. Eighteen people have tested positive and results for 17 tests were still pending Monday.
