The work was first performed in 1970 with the title Cancer in London at the Royal Court Theater under the direction of Martin Rosen. Weller changed the name to Moonchildren shortly thereafter for the work's American premiere at the Arena Stage (Washington, DC) in November 1971, which was directed by Alan Schneider.[1]

Duff-MacCormick garnered a Tony Award nomination for best Featured Actress in a play[4] and Weller won a Drama Desk Award for Most Promising Playwright. Anderman, Duff-MacCormick, and Woods all won Theatre World Awards for their portrayals.
