Chuck Schumer And Bernie Sanders Want A Contingency Plan In Place For If Trump Refuses To Leave Office

Independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has called for a contingency plan in the event that President Donald Trump would refuse to leave office after losing the election — and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer has offered his full support to that plan.

Sanders floated the idea during an interview published Saturday by Politico, saying that Trump’s rhetoric up to this point had given every indication that he might refuse to leave if the election did not break his way.

“This is not just idle speculation. Trump was saying that the only way he could lose the election is if there was — let me get the exact quote — ‘the only way they can take this election away from us is if this is a rigged election.’ Now he is making that statement at a time when virtually every national poll has him behind,” Sanders explained.

“What we have got to do in the next two months is to alert the American people about what that nightmarish scenario might look like in order to prepare them for that possibility and talk about what we do if that happens,” the Vermont senator added.

Sanders went on to describe the “nightmare scenario” that he imagined could come about, saying, “At a time when some states like Pennsylvania are finding that they don’t have the resources right now to count votes, their mail-in ballots, in a rapid way, that it is possible that in some states Trump will be winning on election night, and yet when all of the votes are counted, he will be behind. He will lose. But during that interval, he will create chaos and confusion by claiming that there is massive fraud within the mail-in ballot process.”

Schumer made it clear that he stood with Sanders in a Saturday tweet, saying, “This is important: I’m standing side-by-side with @SenSanders to make sure we have a plan if President Trump refuses to leave office.”

Portland Cops Arrest 59, Highest Number Yet, On 101st Night Of Unrest

Multiple fire bombs, mortars, rocks, and other items were thrown at law enforcement during a riot Saturday night in Southeast Portland.

A crowd gathered at Ventura Park and, at about 9:00p.m., began a march in the street toward East Portland Community Policing Center. East Precinct is an active, working police station and has been the target of arsonists, vandals, and violence in past demonstrations. It is directly adjacent to occupied townhomes and across the street from a school and a community event center. Many in the crowd were carrying large shields (photo) and dressed in protective gear including helmets, gas masks, body armor, and all black clothing. It was clear that the intent of the crowd was not peaceful protest. Therefore officers were positioned in such a way that prevented the march from reaching East Precinct. A police vehicle outfitted with a loudspeaker advised the crowd that, for the safety of city employees and all community members, the march would not be allowed to proceed that direction.

At about 9:15p.m, as the crowd approached officers, individuals began throwing multiple fire bombs at officers. One of them caught a community member on fire. Officers later located the injured person and Portland Fire and Rescue medics offered treatment. The injured person was later taken to a hospital by private vehicle.

Search Underway After Sailor Goes Missing from Carrier Nimitz

Search-and-rescue efforts are underway in the North Arabian Sea after a sailor assigned to an deployed aircraft carrier was reported missing on Sunday.

Personnel from the aircraft carrier Nimitz and guided-missile cruiser Princeton are searching for the missing sailor, according to a Navy news release. The missing sailor, who is assigned to the Nimitz, has been listed as Duty Status Whereabouts Unknown, officials said.

The sailor's identity has not been released, in accordance with Navy policy. No additional details about the incident were immediately available.

The Nimitz has been operating in waters around the Middle East since July. The carrier left its homeport, Naval Base Kitsap, Wash., in April. After completing training at sea, it deployed with the Nimitz Carrier Strike Group in June.

The strike group, which includes about 8,000 sailors, is deployed with the Princeton along with guided-missile destroyers Sterett and Ralph Johnson, nine squadrons from Carrier Air Wing 17 and members of Destroyer Squadron 9.

In recent years, multiple sailors have gone missing from deployed ships, some under unclear circumstances.

Aviation Electronics Technician 2nd Class Slayton Saldana was declared dead last summer following a search after he was believed to have fallen into the Arabian Sea while deployed on the carrier Abraham Lincoln. Ships from the U.S., Spain and Pakistan searched for Saldana for days, but he was never found.

Less than a year earlier, the Navy ended a four-day search for Lt. j.g. Asante McCalla, who was reported missing from the guided-missile cruiser Lake Erie off the coast of California. McCalla's parents told Navy Times last week their family still hasn't received answers from the Navy about how their son died.

"They have not provided this grieving mother with closure," Alicia McCalla, the officer's mother, told the paper.

In 2017, Petty Officer 3rd Class Peter Mims, was discovered hiding in the engine room of the underway cruiser Shiloh after being declared lost at sea following an extensive search operation. He ultimately faced punishment for abandoning watch and dereliction of duty.

Navy officials said updates on the search that was launched on Sunday will be provided as more information becomes available.

DHS Combats Potential Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Attack

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) continues to prepare against ever evolving threats against the American homeland, most recently highlighting efforts to combat an Electromagnetic Pulse attack which could disrupt the electrical grid and potentially damage electronics. Today, the department is releasing the Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) Program Status Report as part of an update on efforts underway in support of Executive Order (E.O.) 13865 on Coordinating National Resilience to Electromagnetic Pulses. E.O. 13865 establishes resilience and security standards for U.S. critical infrastructure as a national priority.

EMP weapons have the potential to disrupt unprotected critical infrastructure within the US and could impact millions over large parts of the country. Since the President’s signing of the E.O. in March 2019, DHS, through the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Agency (CISA), in coordination with the Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), has taken key actions to address known EMP-related vulnerabilities to critical infrastructure. The EMP Program Status Report highlights efforts taken across the public and private sector to foster increased resilience to EMP events. Through data analysis, vulnerability and risk assessments, testing and pilot programs, and government and industry engagement, the department is identifying critical infrastructure and associated functions that are at greatest risk from an EMP, and developing and implementing best practices to reduce the risk.

“EMP attacks are part of the emerging threats against our nation and demand a response,” said Senior Official Performing the Duties of the Deputy Secretary Ken Cuccinelli. “That is why DHS is taking these contingencies very seriously, working diligently to mitigate our risks and equipping our state and local partners with the resources they need to do the same. We’ve made significant progress and look forward to the work ahead.”

“As the Nation’s risk advisor, one of CISA’s priorities is understanding and mitigating threats associated with EMPs,” said CISA Director Chris Krebs. “Over the past year, we have worked with interagency and industry partners to identify the footprint and effects of EMP threats across our National Critical Functions, and are developing sustainable, efficient, and cost-effective approaches to improving the Nation’s resilience to EMPs.”

In 2018, DHS released the Strategy for Protecting and Preparing the Homeland against Threats from Electromagnetic Pulse (EMP) and Geomagnetic Disturbance (GMD), which was the Department’s first articulation of a holistic, long-term, partnership-based approach to protecting critical infrastructure and preparing to respond and recover from potentially catastrophic electromagnetic incidents.

Former Prime Minister Tony Blair has said it is “common sense to move in the direction of digital IDs” as part of efforts to fight coronavirus.

Mr Blair said there should be a record kept by the government of those vaccinated against the virus.

The government recently set out plans to change laws to enable the use of digital identity across the UK.

As prime minister, Mr Blair launched a compulsory ID card scheme, but it was scrapped by the coalition government.

Speaking to the BBC’s Newscast podcast, he said that once a coronavirus vaccine is in use “you’re going to want a record of the fact you’ve been vaccinated”.

“You’ll want a record kept by the government of who’s been vaccinated – this will be essential, again, to restoring confidence,” he added.

The former PM argued that improvements in technology meant privacy issues “can be dealt with”.
