[square brackets] don't always mean kill-box, anon.

In formal writing, when quoting an extract out of a longer work, when the author chooses to extract less than a full sentence and needs to supply some words that were not written by the original author she is quoting, those supplied words are put in brackets, to indicate they were not written by the quoted author.

You can't get a license plate that says "FUCK YOU" or from your state DMV either. They have lists of words that are prohibited on vanity plates. So that appears also to be open to challenge on constitutional grounds based on this SCOTUS decision.
