'Potentially hazardous' asteroid wider than two football fields set to fly past Earth next week

Published 1 hour ago

The space rock, known as asteroid 2020 QL2, is more than 120 meters (393 feet) in diameter.

An asteroid wider than two professional football fields is set to fly safely past Earth on Sept. 14, according to NASA's Center for Near-Earth Object Studies.

The space rock, known as asteroid 2020 QL2, is more than 120 meters (393 feet) in diameter, the government agency notes. It is expected to fly past Earth at a speed of nearly 24,000 mph and come within a distance of 4.2 million miles.

By comparison, the moon is 238,900 miles from the Earth. Asteroid 2020 QL2 is considered "potentially hazardous" by NASA, given its size and close proximity to Earth, although it has almost no chance of hitting the planet next week.

"Potentially hazardous" NEOs are defined as space objects that come within 0.05 astronomical units (4.6 million miles) and measure more than 460 feet in diameter, according to NASA. According to a 2018 report put together by Planetary.org, there are more than 18,000 NEOs.

In August, a basketball court-sized asteroid flew "at least" 45,000 miles away from Earth, according to NASA's Asteroid Watch.

Separately in August, an asteroid the size of a pickup truck flew within 2,000 miles of Earth, the closest ever recorded. It was missed by NASA until after it flew past the planet.

Nolte: Democrat-Run California Is Now a Third-World Country

September 8, 2020

The mayor of Los Angeles ordered residents to shut off their air conditioners, unplug their appliances, and turn on a fan after 3 p.m during a heatwave. Welcome to California.

And yet Democrats have the audacity to call those of us in flyover country “backwards“.

The reality is that out in the sticks, in “hick country,” ordinary Americans live in nice, cool spacious homes without fear of rolling blackouts and without the constant lecturing from nanny-state politicians.

There is no better sign you live in a third world country than rationed electricity. Honestly, if your government is too inept to deliver the basics, and other than water — something else California can’t deliver — there is nothing more basic than electricity, you live in a third world country.

Egyptian archaeologists discover 13 sealed 2,500yo coffins, tease additional ‘very exciting’ discovery coming soon

8 Sep, 2020 08:52

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has confirmed the discovery of 13 pristine condition wooden coffins, each at least 2,500 years old and sealed since they were first interred. And there are likely more to come.

According to a press release, the tomb was discovered near the desert necropolis of Saqqara in Egypt some 11 meters (36 feet) below ground, with the wooden sarcophagi still sealed and largely undisturbed; some even have the original color paint on the wood.

According to Tourism Minister Khaled Al-Anani, three sealed niches were also found, and there are likely to be a lot more discoveries made in this particular burial shaft over the coming months.

Given the immaculate condition of the burial chamber, archaeologists are expecting to find additional treasures hidden inside.

Any goods found buried alongside the dead will shed light on their status, wealth, and influence – though for now at least, the identities of the deceased remain a mystery.

California wildfires set new record with 2 million acres burned; Creek Fire dubbed 'unprecedented disaster'

Published 1 hour ago

The explosive Creek Fire has grown to more than 135,000 acres

A heat wave over Labor Day weekend that fueled new wildfires across California has pushed the state to set a new record for the number of acres burned, as dramatic evacuations continue for one blaze called an "unprecedented disaster."

As of Monday, wildfires have scorched over 2 million acres of land in the Golden State. Crews were conducting active rescue operations to save people surrounded by the flames.

“It’s a little unnerving because September and October are historically our worst months for fires,” Cal Fire spokeswoman Lynne Tolmachoff told The Associated Press. “It’s usually hot, and the fuels really dry out. And we see more of our wind events.”

Tolmachoff said the new record was so striking because of how early it was set. The previous record was set just two years ago and included the deadliest fire in state history, the Camp Fire that roared through Paradise in November 2018 and killed 85 people.

Two of the three largest fires in state history are burning in the San Francisco Bay Area. More than 14,000 firefighters are battling those fires and about two dozen others around California.

In the central part of the state, the explosive Creek Fire has grown to more than 135,000 acres in just three days after erupting over the weekend.

Cal Fire said the blaze remains 0% contained and continues to grow under "extreme fire conditions."…
