A Sri Lankan convict on death row for murder is sworn in as MP

A man who was sentenced to execution for murder has become the first convict to take up a seat in the Sri Lankan parliament. The politician, from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party, was convicted a month ago of murdering an opposition activist after opening fire at a stage being set up by a rival party in 2015. The High Court found him guilty on charges of shooting dead one person and injuring two others.
