Former Vice President Joe Biden penned an op-ed in the New York Times in 2011 declaring: “China’s Rise Isn’t Our Demise.”

Biden wrote:

Some here and in the region see China’s growth as a threat, entertaining visions of a cold-war-style rivalry or great-power confrontation. Some Chinese worry that our aim in the Asia-Pacific is to contain China’s rise.

I reject these views. … I remain convinced that a successful China can make our country more prosperous, not less.

As trade and investment bind us together, we have a stake in each other’s success. On issues from global security to global economic growth, we share common challenges and responsibilities — and we have incentives to work together. That is why our administration has worked to put our relationship on a stable footing.

A separate article in the New York Times last weekend noted that Biden had supported China’s increasing global role, in the hope “of transforming China through trade.”

Biden was a “strong supporter” of China entering the World Trade Organization in 2000, the Times noted.

“Two decades later, China has emerged as a great power — and, in the eyes of many Americans, a dangerous rival,” the Times noted.

Biden continued downplaying the threat of China in his 2020 primary campaign, before pushback from both parties prompted him to take a tougher line.

Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, traveled with him to China on Air Force Two in 2014 and returned with a investment deal worth $1.5 billion, despite having no previous experience in finance.

Georgia secretary of state says 1,000 people double-voted in Georgia primary, suggesting that mail-in voting is in fact fraught with risk

More proof that mail-in voting is high-risk

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger confirmed Tuesday that 1,000 people voted twice in the state's primary election in June, a felony criminal act that he hopes will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

The alleged double voters returned absentee ballots and then also showed up to vote in person on Election Day, Raffensperger announced, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

"A double voter knows exactly what they're doing, diluting the votes of each and every voter that follows the law," the secretary of state said during a press conference. "Those that make the choice to game the system are breaking the law, and as secretary of state, I will not tolerate it."

The Journal-Constitution noted that approximately 150,000 people who had requested absentee ballots ended up voting in person on Election Day.

The large majority reportedly never received their absentee ballots in the mail or simply decided to vote in person instead. But 1,000 both returned their absentee ballots by mail and successfully had their in-person votes tallied by poll workers.

Why does it matter?

The news comes as debate rages on in the country over mail-in voting and the potential for fraud ahead of the general election in November.

Democrats have insisted upon implementing large-scale mail-in voting due to health concerns as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. But several Republicans, including President Trump and Attorney General William Barr, have suggested that doing so would unnecessarily open up the election to potential widespread voter fraud.

President Trump even encouraged North Carolinians last week to test the integrity of the system by voting via mail-in ballot and then voting in person, as well, which is precisely what happened in Georgia.

Despite critics' attempt to portray the president's comments as election coercion, it appeared his intent in suggesting the action was simply to prove that the system was fraught with risk. If the system were working the way Democrats suggested it was, then would-be double voters would be denied at the polls.

That is not what happened in Georgia, however, appearing to lend credence to Republicans' claims.

Raffensperger made clear in his comments that the double voting did not change any race outcomes in the primary election.

Nevertheless, he said that the Georgia attorney general's office along with local prosecutors will look to punish the offenders for their offense. Double voting in Georgia is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to $100,000 in fines.

In response to the announcement, Democratic Party of Georgia executive director Scott Hogan insisted that fraud is rare in Georgia elections and accused Raffensperger of pushing "conspiracy theories."

"It is clear that rather than do his job of promoting the safety and security of our voting process, the secretary of state is instead pushing the GOP's voting conspiracy theories and disinformation," he said.

Sri Lankan convict on death row for murder sworn in as MP amid heckles from opposition

A man who was sentenced to execution for murder has become the first convict to take up a seat in the Sri Lankan parliament. A number of other legislators walked out in protest as he took the oath of office.

Premalal Jayasekara was escorted from prison to parliament after a court ruled that he could take up his MP seat and return after the day’s session, the AFP reported. Opposition lawmakers heckled as the 45-year-old took the oath, while several of them staged a walkout.

The politician, from the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna party (SLPP), was convicted a month ago of murdering an opposition activist after opening fire at a stage being set up by a rival party in January 2015. The Ratnapura High Court found him guilty on charges of shooting dead one person and injuring two others.

His conviction and sentence came after the nominations for the August 5 poll, and he was able to contest the election.

Disney Under Fire for Filming ‘Mulan’ in Chinese City with Uyghur Concentration Camps

Disney has drawn a backlash for its indifference to religious freedom and human rights, cozying up to the Chinese Communist Party and filming parts of its new live action blockbuster Mulan in a city that incarcerates Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities.

In March, 2016, Disney threatened to boycott the state of Georgia over a religious freedom bill that guaranteed faith-based organizations and individuals the right to abstain from activities violating their “sincerely held religious beliefs.”

“Disney and Marvel are inclusive companies, and although we have had great experiences filming in Georgia, we will plan to take our business elsewhere should any legislation allowing discriminatory practices be signed into state law,” a Disney spokesman said at the time.

While Disney saw fit to punish Georgia for its zealous dedication to religious freedom, now the company has rewarded the Chinese Communist Party for its egregious violations of human rights and religious freedom.

Disney’s elected to film its live-action remake of Mulan in China’s Xinjiang province, the very site of China’s documented widespread human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities. China has interned at least one million Muslims in Xinjiang extrajudicial concentration camps and officials have reportedly subjected Uyghur women to hard labor and torture as well as forced sterilizations and abortions.

In the final credits of the film, Disney offers “special thanks” to eight government entities in Xinjiang, including the public security bureau in Turpan, a city in eastern Xinjiang where several re-education camps are located.

BBC HR Exec Shared Posts Wishing for the Death of Trump, Called the President a ‘Massive C*nt’

A human resources executive at the BBC has been revealed to have shared social media posts wishing for the death of President Donald Trump, as Britain’s left-leaning publicly funded broadcaster seeks to clamp down on partisan remarks online.

Melanie Briggs, the “mediation lead” for the BBC and HR executive, had allegedly shown her deep leftist bias on social media.

On Sunday, The Sun newspaper reported that on her account — which has since been deleted — Briggs shared a message in 2017 that said of President Donald Trump: “Please just have a massive coronary and die before you kill everyone else, you deranged, stupid man.”

The HR executive also described the leader of the Free World as a “massive c*nt”.

Briggs was found to have retweeted messages from socialist accounts, expressed support for far-left former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, and called right-leaning British actor Laurence Fox a “c*nt”.

A source within the BBC told the British newspaper: “This is very inappropriate. She’s in a very senior HR role and is constantly swearing using the worst language and posting her political views openly. The timing could not be worse. It’s just after the new top dog said he didn’t want employees openly being political. This is far worse than that.”

“The tweets are outrageous. Wishing somebody dead is appalling. Surely it goes against the BBC values and policies that HR must have an involvement in,” the source added.

“She must get involved in difficult situations at the BBC, and these disturbing tweets have probably caused a difficult situation for herself,” the source concluded.

UK Border Force Brings Ashore 223 Boat Migrants, as Locals Suggest More Landed Undetected

Over 200 illegal boat migrants were brought ashore by UK Border Force on Monday, as local reports suggest more migrants landed in Kent undetected.

The Home Office said that on Monday, 223 migrants were picked up in 18 small rubber dinghies crossing the English Channel from France. The French intercepted another eight boats carrying 106 people before reaching British territorial waters.

In August over 1,468 migrants made the journey, nearly equalling the total number of migrants that made the crossing in the entirety of 2019, which was 1,890.

The recently installed clandestine Channel threat commander, Dan O’Mahoney, said according to the BBC: “These crossings are facilitated by criminals willing to risk people’s lives for money.”

“France is a safe country with a fully functioning asylum system — those seeking refuge can and should claim asylum there,” he said, adding: “I recognise the number still reaching the UK remains too high.”

The latest migrant arrivals bring the total number since the start of the year close to 6,000, with a record 409 migrants successfully reaching the UK in just one day last week.

The actual number of boat migrants is likely to be much higher in reality, however, as the Home Office refuses to publish the number of alleged child migrants and only records those who were detected by the Border Force.

On Monday, locals spotted an additional boat full of 14 to 16 migrant men in their 20s landing on Kingsdown Beach in Kent.

Christian Thrale told the local news outlet Kent Online: “I was sat on the bench, and I was walking back from near the golf course.”

“I could see a boat coming quite quick towards the beach. I saw about 16 inmigrants jump off and walk to shore. They left the boat in the water floating, but me and a couple of women pulled it on to the shore because we didn’t want it floating off,” he added.

Thrale reported that they went off towards the Kingsdown Golf Club before disappearing, saying that he did not “know if there was a car waiting there for them”.

“Police assisted Border Force following a report of suspected migrants seen near Undercliff Road, Kingsdown at 9.50 am on Monday 7 September 2020,” said a Kent Police spokesman.

The problem of undetected migrant landings was highlighted by Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who spoke to local fishermen in Pett Level in Hastings, down the coast from Kent.

Speaking from the East Sussex seaside town in April, Mr Farage said: “I think what’s happening is, boats and dinghies are coming in here, under the cover of darkness, and they’re able not just to unload the crew but to get the boats off on trailers, as well.”

Mr Farage later recounted that “I talked to fishermen, one of whom said he’d seen a boat with 29 people land in a break in the cliffs, and them all disappear — and I’ve no reason to disbelieve young Freddy, the fisherman from Hastings, at all.”

Dover MP Natalie Elphicke said that to quell the waves of migrants pouring over from France, the British government must return all mid-Channel boats to France, stop migrant boats from setting off from France in the first place, and to deport illegal migrants as quickly as possible.

Deported Child Molester Arrested After Crossing Border into Texas

Del Rio Sector Border Patrol agents arrested a previously deported child molester after he illegally re-entered the United States on August 30.

Eagle Pass Station Border Patrol agents encountered a man after he illegally crossed the Mexican border into South Texas. The agents arrested the man and transported him to the station for processing and expulsion under Title 42 Coronavirus protection protocols put in place by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

During processing, the agents identified the man as 36-year-old Ranferi Gomez-Santoyo, a Mexican national. A criminal background investigation and records check revealed that a court in Walker County, Huntsville, Texas, convicted the man in 2010 for indecency with a child — sexual contact. The court sentenced the Mexican national to two years in a state prison, according to information obtained from Del Rio Sector Border Patrol officials.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers deported the man to Mexico in 2012.

Gomez-Santoyo now faces new felony federal charges or illegal re-entry after removal as a convicted felon. If convicted, the criminal alien could face up to 20 years in federal prison.

The following day, Eagle Pass South Station agents arrested a previously deported Mexican national after he illegally crossed the border from Mexico, Breitbart Texas reported.

During the investigation, the agents identified the man as Luis Perez-Gallegos. His criminal history includes a conviction in Miami-Dade County, Florida, for 2nd Degree Murder with a deadly weapon, officials stated. The Florida court sentenced the Mexican national to five years in state prison following his 2006 conviction.

An immigration judge ordered Perez-Gallegos to be removed from the United States. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations officers deported the man to Mexico in 2011. He was the second convicted murderer arrested by Del Rio Sector agents in as many weeks.

Del Rio Sector agents assigned to the Brackettville Station received information from Union Pacific Railroad officials about an “unauthorized passenger” on one of their trains near Spofford, Texas, Breitbart Texas reported. During a search of the train, the agents found 44-year-old Leonardo Matias Carrasco. During a records check, the agents learned that a court in Texas convicted Carrasco for a 1998 murder in Tennessee Colony.

Israeli government set up front company to conceal its actions around the world

The Israeli government set up a company called “Concert” so that individuals and groups around the world could conceal the funding they received from Israel to promote projects aimed at improving Israel’s image. Americans doing this would be violating US law. Will they be investigated? Will US media report this to Americans?

The minutes of the steering committee for a front company established by the Strategic Affairs Ministry in the fight for “mass awareness” against the “delegitimization” of Israel show which projects were funded and the initiative’s failure to raise the amount of donations it promised.

[Editor’s note: the “mass awareness” that concerns Israel is the growing knowledge around the world about Israel’s massive human rights violations.]

Among the projects that the public benefit company, Concert (formerly Kella Shlomo), funded between 2017 and 2020 were delegations of evangelical Christians, an anti-BDS group called Reservists on Duty, and seminars for Israeli backpackers ahead of their long-term trips.

The Strategic Affairs Ministry set up this external body, in the form of a public benefit company, in 2017 to cooperate with people and groups around the world who were interested in using a third party to conceal the funding they received from Israel to promote projects aimed at improving the country’s image.

Two and a half years ago, the cabinet approved allocating 128 million shekels ($37 million) over three years to fund the initiative, on the condition that it raised an equal amount in matching funds from private donors. The cabinet decision stated that the organization would raise these contributions from philanthropic groups or pro-Israel organizations.

The goal of establishing the company, according to the ministry, was to carry out “mass awareness activities” to “implement part of the ministry’s activities concerning the fight against the phenomenon of delegitimization and boycotts against the State of Israel.”

A legal opinion written at the time by the ministry’s legal adviser stated that the activities to be conducted through this company would be those that “require an ‘outside the government’ discussion with the different target audiences.” The ministry explained at the time to journalists that one of the initiative’s purposes was to “provide a rapid and coordinated response against the attempts to tarnish the image of Israel around the world.”

Since its secretive creation, the project has been run in almost complete secrecy. Now, in response to a Freedom of Information Law request submitted by attorney Or Sadan from the Movement for the Freedom of Information and journalist Itamar Baz of the Seventh Eye website, Haaretz is publishing the minutes of Concert’s steering committee.

Israel’s plan to secretly fund pro-Israel groups in the U.S.

‘The repeated efforts to push Israeli government money into American Jewish institutions comes at a time of heightened sensitivities over foreign governments’ quiet attempts to use money to influence American discourse. And they come from a ministry whose actions, even within Israel, are veiled in secrecy.’

The extent to which groups are ‘seeking to go around FARA regulations and disguise the role of foreign governments in these activities, that does raise some problematic questions.’

Last fall, officials with a shadowy Israeli government agency started knocking on the doors of America’s leading Jewish institutions.

They came offering money with few strings attached. They wanted American Jewish institutions to help them fight the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement by running “missions” to Israel for influencers, something some of them were doing anyway.

Jewish institutions aren’t usually in the business of turning down grants. But then, one by one, at least four did.

The Jewish Federations of North America, perhaps the central institution of the organized Jewish community, said no. So did the Jewish Council on Public Affairs, another key establishment group.

The Jewish organizations rejected the offers, according to multiple Jewish communal officials who spoke with the Forward, because accepting the proposed deal would have required them to register as foreign agents with the Department of Justice. At least four organizations turned down offers from the same Israeli agency, the Ministry of Strategic Affairs.

Officials with the ministry were growing “anxious and frustrated” amid the rejections, according to one Jewish professional whose organization the MSA offered to fund. They were “anxious to figure out a way to spend the money,” the professional said.

Now, even after the initial rejections, the ministry is back with a new offer. In recent months, with the help of a former head of a major Jewish organization, ministry officials have met with American Jewish leaders to describe a new effort to fund anti-BDS work here. This time, the money would be funneled through a mysterious Israeli nonprofit that has a war chest of $35 million in Israeli government funds.

“The Israelis are… not quite understanding how things are done here, and certainly not understanding well that you can get American Jewry into trouble with their neighbors if you are not sensitive to the way things are legally done in the United States,” said Jonathan Sarna, a professor of American Jewish history at Brandeis University.

NPR Compares Donald Trump to Mussolini, Ties President to KKK

National Public Radio (NPR) conducted an interview on Sunday comparing President Donald Trump to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini and tied the president to the kind of conspiracy theories that led to the creation of the Ku Klux Klan.

Tax-payer-funded NPR also implied that former Presidents Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush also embraced similar fascist ideology:

Historians have noted similarities between Donald Trump and Mussolini since before the 2016 election. Some of the racial justice protesters this summer have said they are fighting fascism in the form of President Trump. And the presence of antifa — anti-fascist — protesters at some demonstrations has upped attention to the word.

But what is and isn’t fascist isn’t even agreed upon by scholars.

Jason Stanley, a professor of philosophy at Yale University, offers one perspective on the word. He defines fascism as “a cult of the leader who promises national restoration in the face of humiliation brought on by supposed communists, Marxists and minorities and immigrants who are supposedly posing a threat to the character and the history of a nation.”

Stanley, who is the author of the 2018 book How Fascism Works: The Politics of Us and Them, was asked on NPR’s All Things Considered about how Trump stacks up today compared to his 2018 assessment. Stanley replied:

Well if someone described to you, ‘Here’s country X. The leader of country X claims that he is going to remain in power for many years beyond what is legal. He sends federal forces in to quell largely peaceful protests for racial justice in his country. His attorney general seems dedicated to him over the rule of law. The major political party that controls the courts and most of the government has, as their entire platform, devotion to him.’

“What would you think about that country?” Stanley said. “Where would you think the direction of that country was headed? I would think that country was losing its democratic status, especially when it had a history of voter suppression and the highest incarceration rate in the world as background conditions.”

Stanley was also asked about Trump and conspiracy theories, a narrative repeatedly reported on by NPR, and the academic said that these conspiracy theories are the “basis of Ku Klux Klan ideology.”

“Conspiracy theories destroy an information space,” Stanely said, and continued:

The goal — fascism is based on a friend-enemy distinction, so you’re either with them or against them. The enemy is the enemy of civilization. What it does is it destroys the information space. It makes you think that even if your guys are corrupt and lying, it is because [the leader is] facing a mysterious cabal that is controlling things that are trying to foment a race war. This is the basis of the Ku Klux Klan ideology.

The NPR interview did not mention the Democrat Party’s connection to the KKK.

Public health expert reveals the FDA and Fauci’s shocking plot to bury hydroxychloroquine as potential COVID-19 cure

On the show “Life, Liberty & Levin,” host Mark Levin talked to Dr. Harvey A. Risch, a professor of Epidemiology in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at the Yale School of Public Health and Yale School of Medicine, about hydroxychloroquine, a drug that can be used to prevent and treat coronavirus (COVID-19).

The pair also discussed why the government and mainstream media are trying to hinder developments concerning the use of the drug to fight the pandemic.

What is hydroxychloroquine?

Several months ago, people have never heard of hydroxychloroquine (HCQ). Now, HCQ is the most controversial drug on the planet. Mainstream media claims it’s worse than heroin, opioids, or other drugs.

On August 4, Steve Hatfill, a veteran neurologist said that there are “53 studies that show positive results of hydroxychloroquine in COVID infections. There are 14 global studies that show neutral or negative results— and 10 of them were of patients in very late stages of COVID-19, where no antiviral drug can be expected to have much effect. Of the remaining four studies, two came from the same University of Minnesota author. The other two are from the faulty Brazil paper, which should be retracted and the fake Lancet paper, which was.”

Levin exclaimed that the report was unusual, and he discussed another article from Risch, the author of more than 300 peer-reviewed publications. In the article, which was published on July 23, Risch revealed that he is “usually accustomed to advocating for positions within the mainstream of medicine.”

The professor was shocked that, during the coronavirus pandemic, he is “fighting for a treatment that the data fully supports but which, for reasons having nothing to do with a correct understanding of the science, has been pushed to the sidelines. As a result, tens of thousands of patients with COVID-19 are dying unnecessarily. Fortunately, the situation can be reversed easily and quickly.”

When asked about his stance on the studies he reviewed and the use of HCQ for COVID-19, Risch reiterated that “the evidence is overwhelming.”

However, Risch mentioned a “massive disinformation campaign” about HCQ from the government to mainstream media that either suppresses the truth or covers it up with a false message.

While Risch has yet to determine why HCQ is being discredited as a potential cure for COVID-19, he said that as an expert on the science behind it, the “one-sided science that supports this result” is stronger than anything he has studied in his career, particularly for high-risk patients that are treated early as outpatients.

Levin noted that most of the studies cited by government scientists and the media don’t treat patients early after being diagnosed with coronavirus. Risch agreed, saying that either these studies cite hospitalized patients or they cite the studies from Minnesota wherein low-risk patients, who are younger than 60 and don’t have chronic conditions are treated with HCQ. These low-risk patients can often recover on their own even without any treatment.

Risch emphasized that HCQ is best used on elderly high-risk patients with chronic conditions like diabetes since they have a greater chance of being hospitalized and dying from COVID-19. Studies on high-risk patients have shown that HCQ offers benefits for high-risk groups compared to low-risk groups

Bribe Offered to Impose COVID Restrictions

Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said last month via Belarusian Telegraph Agency, BelTA., that World Bank and IMF offered him a bribe of $940 million USD in the form of “Covid Relief Aid.” In exchange for $940 million USD, the World Bank and IMF demanded that the President of Belarus:

• imposed “extreme lockdown on his people”

• force them to wear face masks

• impose very strict curfews

• impose a police state

• crash the economy

Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko REFUSED the offer and stated that he could not accept such an offer and would put his people above the needs of the IMF and World Bank. This is NOT a conspiracy. You may research this yourself. He actually said this!

Now IMF and World Bank are bailing out failing airlines with billions of dollars, and in exchange, they are FORCING airline CEOs to implement VERY STRICT POLICIES such as FORCED face masks covers on EVERYONE, including SMALL CHILDREN, whose health will suffer as a result of these policies.

And if it is true for Belarus, then it is true for the rest of the world! The IMF and World Bank want to crash every major economy with the intent of buying over every nation’s infrastructure at cents on the dollar!

The poster - stuck to the salon window with masking tape - had five bullet points

The post said: 'No cash; Covid talk is banned; you can't catch what doesn't exist'

Hairdressers and salon staff are required to wear surgical face masks and visors

A beauty salon has been slammed after putting a poster in its window denying the existence of coronavirus and telling customers they do not have to wear face masks.

Skin Kerr Aesthetics, Hair and Beauty, in Bootle, Merseyside, shared the notice on its Facebook page, which has since been deleted.

The poster, stuck to the salon window with masking tape, had bullet points saying: 'Covid Free Salon; no masks, we take cash; Covid talk is banned; you can't catch what doesn't exist.'

The bullet points end with '#voodoovirusisbullsh**' and '#wedonotconsent' and states 'please respect the rules of the salon'.

Jewish groups support BLM while ignoring Palestinian genocide

There is a tendency on the part of major Jewish groups in the United States and in Europe to discover what they describe as anti-Semitism wherever one turns. Last month, a statue of the well-known and highly respected 18th century French writer and political philosopher Voltaire was removed from outside the Académie Française in Paris. Voltaire was a major figure in the “Enlightenment,” during which what we now call science and applied rationalism challenged the authority of the church and the King.

The statue had recently been vandalized by the French version of Black Lives Matter (BLM) because Voltaire had reportedly invested in the French East India Company, which engaged in the triangular trade between Europe, Africa and the New World. The commodities included Africans who were destined to become slaves in the European colonies. Beyond that Voltaire, a man of his times, believed blacks to have “little or no intelligence” and also considered Jews to be born “with raging fanaticism in their hearts.”

Voltaire was reportedly much admired by Hitler, so perhaps it would not be off base to suggest that in France, where the Jewish community is extremely powerful while Africans are not, it was Voltaire cast as the anti-Semite that consigned his statue to a government warehouse never to be seen again. By that reasoning, one expects that the world will soon have a ban on the music of Richard Wagner and Ludwig van Beethoven as they too were admired by Hitler.

The idea that someone can change history by ignoring aspects of it means that school textbooks are being rewritten at a furious pace to make sure that there is overwhelming coverage of the holocaust and black achievement. Also, the erasing of monuments is being pursued with singular intensity in the United States, where the Founding Fathers and other dead white males are being one by one consigned to the trash heap. Doing so, unfortunately, also destroys the learning experience that can be derived from using the monuments as visual mechanisms for confronting and understanding the mistakes made in the past. A commission set up by the mayor of the District of Columbia has, for example, compiled a hit list of monuments and commemorations that must be either removed, renamed or placed into “context.” It includes the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. The name “Columbia” is, of course, certain to be changed.

California Bill Gives California Governor & State Dems Full Control Over Prescription Drugs

California lawmakers on Monday passed a bill to use the most populous state’s market power to lower the cost and increase the availability of prescription drugs for its nearly 40 million residents, with supporters citing the coronavirus pandemic as proof that more is needed to reduce shortages in drugs and other medical supplies.

The state Legislature approved a measure that would require the California Health and Human Services Agency to create partnerships designed to increase competition, lower prices and reduce shortages for generic prescription drugs.

However, the bill stops short of Gov. Gavin Newsom’s January budget proposal for the state to create its own generic label.

Lawmakers acted as they took up dozens of bills while racing to complete their work before adjourning for the year.

The state Senate approved the bill 32-7 late Monday night, sending the bill to the Democratic governor for his signature. In January, Newsom said the goal is to “take the power out of the hands of greedy pharmaceutical companies.”

Democratic Sen. Richard Pan, a pediatrician, cited shortages spurred by the coronavirus pandemic as one rationale for his bill.

“As drugs are identified as effective treatments for COVID-19 patients, it is likely that there will be supply issues for those drugs as well,” he said in a legislative analysis.
