Mark Zuckerberg: ‘Nothing Illegitimate’ About Election Taking ‘Additional Days, or Even Weeks’

In a recent interview with Axios on HBO, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg urged the media to assure the public that there was “nothing illegitimate” about waiting days or even weeks to tabulate the results of the upcoming presidential election.

In a recent interview with Axios on HBO, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that it may take days or even weeks for votes in the upcoming presidential election to be counted and verified but there was “nothing illegitimate” about this practice. “You said on election day it’s over, but it well might not be, right?” Axios asked Zuckerberg who replied: “I think the dynamic that you’re talking about is really important, which is that we may not know the final result on election night.”

Zuckerberg went on to add: “One of the things that I think we and other media need to start doing is preparing the American people that there’s nothing illegitimate about this election taking additional days, or even weeks to make sure that all of the votes are counted. In fact, that might be important to make sure that this is a legitimate and fair election.” Zuckerberg discussed how Facebook plans to facilitate that stating: “So, we’re going to do a bunch of different messaging around that, just to make sure that people know that that’s normal. So if one of the candidates in any of the races claims victory before there’s a consensus result, then we’re going to add some informational context to that post directly saying that there’s no consensus result yet.”

Zuckerberg discussed fears of civil unrest surrounding the election stating: “I think that this is important because there is, unfortunately, I think, a heightened risk of civil unrest in the period, you know, between voting and a result being called or after that. And I just think that we need to be doing everything that we can to reduce the chances of violence or civil unrest in the wake of this election.” The full interview is set to be aired on Axios on HBO on Tuesday.

COVID robocop: the droid that reminds you to wear your mask

PARIS (Reuters) - Engineers have developed a robot that can detect whether people are wearing a mask to guard against COVID-19 and, if not, politely remind them to put one on. The feature is an upgrade of Pepper, a 120 cm (47 inch) high robot with human-like features that is already in operation in some countries welcoming visitors to shops, exhibitions and other public spaces. Pepper’s camera scans the faces of people approaching it, and if it detects the lower half of their face is uncovered, it pronounces the phrase: “You have to always wear a mask properly.” If it sees that the visitor then puts on a mask, the robot follows up with the phrase: “Thank you for having put on your mask.”

The idea is not to have a robot police whether people are wearing masks, but to provide a friendly reminder, said Jonathan Boiria, head of sales in Europe for SoftBank Robotics, the company behind Pepper. “Shops have to assign people at the entrance, a lot of people, to ensure respect for the wearing of masks, and sometimes that is a stretch,” Boiria told Reuters in Paris. “A robot allows you to free up some people so they can focus on their normal tasks.” “We’re all human. Sometimes I take off my mask when I get off the bus and I forget to put it back on when I arrive at the office. The robot provides a reminder. We can all get it wrong or forget.”

Hawaii officials intercept cult at airport, reroute group back to Colorado

Protesters had reportedly taken issue with the group's 'appropriation of Hawaiian culture' in the previous month

Keep it moving, folks. Authorities have announced that members of a Colorado-based cult were intercepted at a Hawaii airport on Sunday and subsequently returned to the mainland. On Sept. 7, the Maui Police Department (MPD) received word from Kahului Airport screeners that three members of the "Love Has Won Cult" were trying to travel to a non-approved location in Maui, law enforcement officials said in a statement issued Monday. Love Has Won leader Amy Carlson and members Jason Castillo and Miguel Lamboy arrived on Kauai about one month ago, where they rented a house. During their time in the Aloha State, “several protests, vandalism and small fires” were reported outside of their rental, according to the MPD. "As a result, law enforcement intervened to ensure the safety of the group,” the MPD said. According to The Garden Island newspaper, local protesters objecting to the presence of Love Has Won on the island took issue with the Crestone group's "appropriation of Hawaiian culture," as the group’s leader claimed to be Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of fire. When protests escalated on Friday, the Love Has Won members decided to leave Kauai for the sake of their safety.

When questioned at Kahului Airport on Sunday about their travel plans to Maui, Castillo described the non-approved location destination as a misunderstanding and said that the group would be returning to Colorado. The group also revealed that 11 more members were traveling from Kauai to Oahu, to meet them in Maui. After a coordinated effort between multiple agencies, all 14 members of the cult voluntarily departed for Colorado, per the MPD. Jessica Lani Rich, president of the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii, said that Love Has Won was not implicated for violating quarantine restrictions, unlike another cult that recently visited the state. Members of the Carbon Nation cult were charged in June for violating Hawaii's mandatory 14-day quarantine while visiting Puna on the Big Island of Hawaii, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports. The Carbon Nation members left the state soon after. “During COVID-19, sending two different cults back to the mainland certainly shows that these are unusual cases that the state of Hawaii is getting during these difficult times,” Rich told the outlet.
