Someone got tenure. Then Dept. Chair. Then Dean. They recruited more like themself. The sought leftist grant money. Grant-making organizations only gave grants for leftist studies. Professors who wanted promotions and additional grants had to write papers and do research that these types of grants funded. Without grants they cannot keep a job or get any income. After a while academia became dominated by leftists. Then the universities started churning out a 2nd, and 3rd generation crop of leftist-educated, leftist-indoctrinated marxist students, who became the next generation of faculty.
Did China help? Probably. Did Soros help? Who knows? Trace the money flows in the academic world and we could probably learn a lot about how it habbened.
