If he can't establish an alibi, such as being at work at the time of access, he is SO screwed. Literally. That apparently ALL the files had been erased argues for innocence. It gives the appearance of a shared computer where the other party downloaded the files, transferred them to removable media and then marked them for deletion. If this guy was savvy enough to access the dark web using his own computer, he was savvy enough to encrypt the files, then BleachBit them and overwrite the free space.

That reminds me of a similar Christmas many years back. Unemployed, all but homeless, really dark times. Insane. My folks gave my kids the only presents they got. Not much … but the choo-choo train had lights and a whistle and went round and round. I had NO money even to feed myself. I was a single Dad with custody and I was only allowed in the house untiul bedtime. But I got to hold my sons for Christmas and sit them on my lap and read to them until bed time. Then I put them to bed and was driven back to my dark apartment. I had no money for utilities, either. Heat came from the apartment on the ground floor. A lot of us have something like this in our past. My sons, now in their 40s, remember that Christmas and another, happier, night when there was a FIERCE lightning storm raging all around us and, rather than let them fear it, I opened the drapes on all three picture windows in the family room, sat a rocking chair where we could see all around us and, with them in their pajamas, we sat and talked about the lightning and the thunder and how we were safe indoors. They fell asleep there in my arms / on my lap and they never feared the lightning again.

A lot of us have stories …
