(CNN)A small town in eastern Washington is in ruins after a fast-moving wildfire swept through Monday, and teams are still working to account for all residents, county officials said.

why those towns?

is it because self-reliant patriots live there?

About 80% of the homes and buildings in Malden, about 35 miles south of Spokane, have been completely destroyed, including the fire station, post office, city hall and library, the Whitman County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.

Homes in nearby Pine City were also damaged or destroyed, according to the sheriff's office.

"The scale of this disaster really can't be expressed in words," Whitman County Sheriff Brett Myers said in a statement. "The fire will be extinguished but a community has been changed for a lifetime. I just hope we don't find the fire took more than homes and buildings. I pray everyone got out in time."

The Bear Fire burning in Northern California exploded Tuesday night and into Wednesday, destroying the rural Berry Creek community above Lake Oroville in Butte County, and prompting evacuation orders for at least 20,000 people lower down the hill in the Oroville area and surrounding towns.

Berry Creek, a secluded rural area of about 1,200 people, was in ashen ruins Wednesday, hours after a midnight firestorm and frantic evacuation.

“I’ve only seen three homes left standing,” said Sacramento Bee photographer Jason Pierce Wednesday afternoon, reporting from the hill town. “Dozens of houses and businesses are destroyed. Every house is just dust.”

Once units hit the ground around 8 a.m. updates on the fire’s progression and containment were slow as all involved agencies worked to prevent the fire reaching the city of Oroville.

At 2:15 p.m., Cal Fire-Butte County Public Information Officer Rick Carhart said exactly how many structures have been destroyed by the fire may not be known until evaluations can begin.

“This fire is extremely different from anything I’ve ever dealt with,”Carhart said.

At the time, there were approximately 83 engines, 43 hand crews, 20 bulldozers and 13 water tenders deployed.
