Dear Valor Community Members,
The entire election process and, in particular, last night's election outcome, has resulted in heightened emotions from many members of our community. In our duty to hold our community's well-being sacred, we responded to these feelings this morning by holding Circle in Prides to allow a safe space for scholars to ask questions, express their emotions, and to hear the different perspectives that make up our wonderfully diverse community. In listening and taking part in these conversations, we at Valor are more convicted than ever before that our intentionally diverse community - and the opportunities we get to share and learn alongside our peers here - are needed for our nation's future.
We honor the democratic ideals and process by which our leaders are selected. And yet, we hold fast to the belief that it is also our responsibility to hold ourselves and our leaders to our highest ideals and values. President-elect Trump, in his campaign, has made statements that are divisive and that have the potential to make members of our diverse community feel unsafe and devalued. Therefore, while we know that not all of his supporters share those beliefs, we must also stand firm in our beliefs that we will not tolerate hatred, bigotry, or exclusivity in any of their forms.
As we all continue to process our emotions regarding the events of this election - and as important current events like this inevitably arise in the future - we will continue to build space for reflection and conversation into our school days as a way of making our community stronger and more unified. As we do so, we commit to acting in the interest of keeping our scholars, their families, and our staff feeling safe regardless of nationality, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, or political beliefs. We encourage all of our community members to seek a diversity of perspective, exercise understanding over judgment, kindness over blame, and hope over despair. We urge you to continue these conversations at home and to reach out to us immediately if your scholar is feeling unsafe or unwelcome at school.
Sincerely,
The Valor Leadership Team
