Jonathan Maas was arrested for allegedly starting a fire in the woods near the frisbee golf course at Dexter State Recreation Area in Oregon.

A man faces accusations he tried to start a fire in the woods near the frisbee golf course at Dexter State Recreation Area on Wednesday.

Firefighters responded to the scene and found passersby had quickly put out the fire, the Dexter fire chief said earlier this week.

“The fire was in a wooded area and was approximately 5 feet in diameter before it was extinguished by two people playing frisbee golf in the area,” the sheriff’s office said. “A man in a minivan was seen leaving the area shortly before the fire was discovered.”

The Lane County Sheriff’s Office investigated the fire.

On Thursday, deputies arrested Jonathan Maas, 44, of Springfield on suspicion of arson in the first degree in connection with the Dexter fire.

Transient Michael Jarrod Bakkela, who has a lengthy criminal record, was arrested for allegedly starting the Almeda Fire that roared through Phoenix and Talent, Oregon this week.

The investigation started September 8 with a report to 911 that residents witnessed the man “lighting a fire behind their house on Quail Lane,” the sheriff’s office said. “Due to the impending fire, the witnesses had to flee their home and could not be interviewed immediately.”

When deputies and stop troopers arrived, they found Michael Jarrod Bakkela, 41, standing “close to a very large fire threatening several homes, the sheriff’s office said.

China Launches First Human Trials For 'Nasal Spray' COVID-19 Vaccine

Markets were already heading lower earlier this month when AstraZeneca announced that the vaccine it had been developing in partnership with Oxford University had hit an unexpected snag: a patient showed an unexpected "adverse reaction" resembling a form of meningitis. Suddenly, all the skeptics' warnings about a vaccine not being available for months, perhaps even years, are ringing in professionals' heads again.

But in China, regulators within the CCP have allowed vaccine maker Beijing Wantai Biological Pharmacy to launch "Phase 1" human trials of a nasal spray vaccine, which is being co-developed by researchers at Xiamen University and Hong Kong University.

Intranasal spray has previously been developed as a vaccine for the flu and is recommended for use among children and adults who want to avoid the more common needle injection. While it is not the most frequent choice for delivery, scientists around the world are working to develop sprays as an alternative to muscle jabs for all sorts of vaccines.

It's China's tenth vaccine candidate to proceed to human testing, though Beijing has much more sway to "relax" certain standards than the FDA, as the world recently learned. And with the AZ-Oxford vaccine now on hold, Beijing now has a chance to close the gap.

The new spray contains weakened copies of the virus implanted with the genetic segments of the coronavirus’s spike protein that will allow it to take hold inside the patient's nasal passage.

Once administered, the vaccine mimics the natural infection of respiratory viruses to stimulate the body’s immune response against the pathogen that causes COVID-19, according to Science and Technology Daily, a paper affiliated with China’s Ministry of Science and Technology.

Some scientists hope a vaccine that gets sprayed through the nose may have a better chance of stopping the spread of the virus because, as we continue to learn, the virus appears to primarily spread through the air via aerosol infection.

China's new nasal spray vax project joins about 35 other candidates currently in human testing, as the global race to be first with an effective vaccine intensifies, with the candidate from Russia so far holding its own alongside a battery of projects developed in the West. In the wake of AstraZeneca’s setback, China’s most advanced vaccine developers, including CanSino Biologics Inc. and state-owned China National Biotec Group Co., have emphasized the safety of their own shots.

NBG said the two shots it is testing are effective in staving off infection. None of the Chinese diplomats and workers traveling to virus hot spots overseas has reported infections several months after receiving the vaccines, Zhou Song, CNBG’s general counsel, said.

Venezuela says it captured 'US spy' targeting two oil refineries with 'heavy, specialized' weapons

President NIcolas Maduro of Venezuela has announced the capture of “an American spy” with heavy weapons and money near two refineries in the state of Falcon. The man is said to be a Marine who worked for the CIA in Iraq.

The spy was trying to collect information on the refineries in Amuay and Cardón, Maduro said in a televised address on Friday. The two facilities are located on the Paraguaná Peninsula, along the Venezuelan coast just south of Aruba.

According to the president, the detained American is a member of the US Marine Corps who worked with the CIA in Iraq, and was captured with “heavy, specialized weapons and a large amount of cash.”

Maduro added that he ordered heightened security at all Venezuelan refineries after the spy was captured. Earlier, he said, the country’s Petroleum Ministry discovered and thwarted a plan “to cause an explosion” at the El Palito refinery in Carabobo, west of Caracas.

Powerful explosion at battery shop in Iran kills 1, damages 30 buildings

A massive explosion ripped through a battery store in Nasimshahr, a city in Iran’s Tehran province, killing at least one person and damaging 30 surrounding buildings as well as nearby cars.

The explosion happened on Friday evening local time, in the city some 15 kilometers southwest of Tehran. Videos from the area show shattered glass and debris everywhere, and fire trucks still on the scene.

Gavin Newsom at Ash-Strewn Wildfire Site: ‘The Debate Is Over Around Climate Change’

California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), without evidence, declared Friday that the ongoing wildfires in his state prove the science surrounding global warming is now officially settled.

“The debate is over around climate change. Just come to the state of California, observe it with your own eyes,” a grinning Newsom told reporters while touring the fire-ravaged North Complex near Oroville. “It’s not an intellectual debate, it’s not even debatable.”

“We’re in the midst of a climate emergency, we’re in the midst of a climate crisis,” he continued. “We’re experiences weather conditions the likes of which we’ve never experienced in our lifetime. We’re experiencing what so many people predicted decades and decades ago. All of that now is reality.”

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said Thursday that the August Complex Fire has burned 471,185 acres in the Elk Creek and Stonyford area, surpassing the 2018 Mendocino Complex Fire, which burned 459,123 acres.

Six of the largest fires in California’s history have taken place in 2020. Cal Fire said 29 major wildfires are active and more than 3.1 million acres have burned in the state since the beginning of the season.

The National Interagency Fire Center said 102 large fires have burned a combined 4.4 million acres in 12 states in the western United States, resulting in some two dozen deaths in California, Oregon, and Washington.

In California, five people were killed in the LNU Lightning Complex, 10 were killed in the North Complex, and one each was killed in the CZU August Lightning Complex, August Lightning Complex, Tatham Fire, and Hills Fires.

Pope Francis Declares Sex and Eating Are 'Divine' Pleasures Sent by God

Pope Francis has been a figure of controversy since his election in 2013. For some, his papacy hasn’t gone far enough in reforming the Roman Catholic Church, especially in acknowledging the sexual abuse of so many. Others believe he’s crossed the line by advocating a radical liberal agenda, including climate change, radical wealth redistribution, and his condemnation of capitalism.

But on the matter of human sexuality, Cheech and Chong’s old joke comes to mind: “You no playa da game, you no make-a da rules.” Most popes have heeded that advice and, outside of telling Catholics they can’t use artificial birth control, some ancient strictures have remained.

Now, along comes Pope Francis, who blesses the sex act, calling it a “divine gift.” He also praises the pleasures of eating as from God.

At the rate he’s going, he’ll whittle down those Seven Deadly Sins to just one or two.

In an interview with Italian writer Carlo Petrini, who has compiled several conversations with the pope for a new book, his Holiness referred to sex and food, among other delights, as gifts from God. Furthermore, to enjoy them is not sinful, as “overzealous” church leaders have taught in the past.

“Pleasure arrives directly from God. It is neither Catholic nor Christian nor anything else; it is simply divine,” he tells Petrini in the book “TerraFutura: Conversations With Pope Francis on Integral Ecology,” an English working title, out now in Italy. “The pleasure of eating and sexual pleasure come from God.”

While this is self-evident, it may be interpreted as condemning the “overzealous” past popes who insisted that sex was holy only when done in the context of marriage and only if it was intended to be an act of procreation. Obviously, Francis is not referring to sex outside of marriage. And as far as eating, he’s not referring to overeating — the sin of gluttony.

But is he saying that sexual pleasure is holy even if procreation isn’t the intent?

Francis continued, referring to the church’s past condemnation for life’s gustatory and sexual pleasures as “overzealous morality … A wrong interpretation of the Christian message.”

“The pleasure of eating is there to keep you healthy by eating, just like sexual pleasure is there to make love more beautiful and guarantee the perpetuation of the species,” said the Pontifex Maximus.

It appears that this is a pope who lives in the modern world. A Catholic might interpret those words to mean that any loving union where sex is enjoyed is blessed by God, not necessarily one involving marriage.

Is that really revolutionary?

“I don’t think it’s unusual for a pope to say what he specifically said, though,” said writer and Catholic critic Peter Williams. “In calling the enjoyment of food and sex ‘divine’, the Holy Father is rightly pointing out that pleasure comes from God.” Williams told Newsweek that the Bishop of Rome was describing “the church’s acceptance of ‘human, simple, moral pleasure,’ like good cuisine and fulsome sexual love in marriage.”

As the pope said, the fact that sexual pleasure is “divine” is simply common sense. But without the intent to procreate? St. Paul might have been doubtful, but it’s a simple acknowledgment on the part of Pope Francis that the divine gift of sexual pleasure among lovers comes from heaven and whether they pursue a sexual liaison for procreative purposes or not, it is a blessed act.
