Just because there is source code out there that appears to be the same thing doesn't mean that the pre-compiled application was compiled using the same source.

Not responding to your question directly, but adding to the mess:
Every operating system you can get is compromised.
Every chip in your machine that has access to system memory (anything with DMA) is compromised.
The problem is much, much worse than most realize.
IMO, the only way forward is:
1) Completely new hardware industry.
2) Completely new software industry with two types of software:
a) Anything touching security is 100% open source (hardware and software.)
b) Anything proprietary has to be separated from (a) using an interface that cannot be compromised (i.e.: simple serial communications.)
