NY judge greenlights deposition of Saudi officials in lawsuit by 9/11 victims’ families, despite ongoing Justice Dept opposition

The Saudi government must make 24 current and former officials available to testify on their knowledge of the 9/11 attacks, a US judge has ruled, in a victory for victims’ families despite opposition from the Attorney General.

Riyadh was ordered to make the officials – including a prince and his chief of staff – available for deposition in a judgment made public on Thursday, just a day before the 19th anniversary of the worst terror attack ever to take place on US soil.

Manhattan federal Judge Sarah Netburn ruled the victims’ families have the right to question Saudi officials about their alleged roles in providing support to the 9/11 terrorists inside the US.

Search autocomplete rejigged by Google for political queries, as tech giants become the election meddlers they claim to fight

Google is tightening its autocomplete feature on searches, vowing to remove predictions that support or oppose any political party, and any voting info – even if true. If anyone else did this, it would be called election meddling.

The tech behemoth is clamping down on election-related searches, announcing in a blog post on Thursday it will remove all autocomplete entries that “could be interpreted as claims for or against any candidate or political party.” Statements about “voting methods, requirements, or the status of voting locations” will also be axed – even if they’re 100 percent accurate.

TONS of ammonium nitrate discovered at Beirut port weeks after same substance sparked devastating blast

An inspection of Beirut port has uncovered tons of ammonium nitrate, the same highly explosive chemical substance that sparked the massive blast which ravaged the Lebanese capital in early August.

Following a meeting with top military officials in charge of work at the ill-fated port, Lebanese President Michel Aoun announced that yet another 4.35 tons of ammonium nitrate had been found at the location. It is believed to have been stored near the entrance to the port for some 15 years, since 2005.

The worrying discovery was made on September 2 and the ammonium nitrate stockpile has since been safely destroyed, Aoun said.

During their search, the Lebanese military also came across 143 containers holding other flammable material, he added.

Sleeping very soundly

On a Saturday morning

I was dreaming I was Al Capone

There's a rumour going round

Gotta clear outta town

I'm smelling like a dry-fish bone

Here come the Law,

Gonna break down the door

Gonna carry me away once more

Never, I never,

I never want it any more

Gotta get away from this stone-cold floor

Crazy

Stone-cold crazy, you know

Gold Mine Collapse in Congo's Kamituga Kills At Least 50, Report Says

Accidents in artisanal gold mines are frequently reported in the Democratic Republic of Congo. While the country enjoys natural richness in oil, minerals, timber, diamonds and other resources, the safety standards in the mines are said to be poor.

At least 50 people are presumed dead after an artisanal gold mine collapsed Friday afternoon near Kamituga, in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Reuters reported, citing a local mining NGO.

"Several miners were in the shaft which was covered and no one could get out. We are talking about fifty young people", said Emiliane Itongwa, president of the Women's Social Support and Supervision Initiative, cited by Reuters.

Sudan Ends 30 Years of Islamic Law by Separating Religion, State

Sudan’s transitional government agreed to separate religion from the state, ending 30 years of Islamic rule in the North African nation.

Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Abdel-Aziz al-Hilu, a leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North rebel group, signed a declaration in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, on Thursday adopting the principle.

“For Sudan to become a democratic country where the rights of all citizens are enshrined, the constitution should be based on the principle of ‘separation of religion and state,’ in the absence of which the right to self-determination must be respected,” the document states.
