Man arrested for arson after fire at Hillsboro restaurant

Firefighters were able to quickly put out a Saturday morning fire at the Reedville Cafe. The fire was contained to the recycling and refuse area on the outside of the building. The fire was contained to the recycling and refuse area on the outside of the building.A Hillsboro man was arrested Saturday, Sept. 12, after allegedly starting a fire at the Reedville Cafe.

Hillsboro Fire & Rescue said it responded just after midnight Saturday morning to the fire at the Reedville Cafe. A fire investigator determined the fire had been started intentionally.

The fire at 7575 S.E. Tualatin Valley Highway was initially called in by a Washington County sheriff's deputy at about 12:15 a.m. Saturday, according to Hillsboro Fire & Rescue. Crews responded right away and were able to extinguish the fire quickly.

The fire apparently started in a recycling container in the recycling and refuse area on the outside of the cafe. It spread to multiple collection containers, but it was contained to the refuse area and did not make its way into the rest of the structure, Hillsboro Fire & Rescue said.

Sgt. Eric Bunday, spokesperson for the Hillsboro Police Department, said Richard Haws, 24, was treated at the scene for injuries and then taken to the hospital. Upon being released from the hospital, Bunday said, Haws was arrested on a charge of first-degree arson.

There are no other suspects or charges in the case, Bunday confirmed.

"This was an isolated incident," Bunday said. "He set the fire and then remained at the scene."

Haws was cooperative and did not attempt to evade deputies at the scene, Bunday added.

Piseth Pich, spokesperson for Hillsboro Fire & Rescue, said the fire department notified Hillsboro police about the suspicious fire after responding to put it out.

Haws has a felony record in Oregon. Marion County Circuit Court records indicate he was convicted in 2015 of aggravated harassment and assaulting a public safety officer.
