Millions of $ were donated to make the Marina Abramovic Institute happen. However, the project was cancelled after building costs "ballooned" to over twice the projected costs. Despite the project being a no-go, the money was not returned to the donors. Marina Abramovic claimed that the money went to Rem Koolhaas for his "design work" on the MAI.
