‘It’s Out Of Control’: How QAnon Undermines Legitimate Anti-Trafficking Efforts

The child sex trade is a global crisis. Far-right conspiracy theorists are harassing, distracting and intimidating the organizations fighting to end it.

Hundreds of protests erupted across the country in recent weeks, purportedly to demand an end to child sex trafficking. From tiny communities such as Poteau, Oklahoma, to Los Angeles, Miami, Denver and other major cities, people stormed the streets, calling for the mass execution of pedophiles and even accusing various public figures of torturing, raping and enslaving children to harvest their blood.

Lurking at the helm of these so-called “Save Our Children” rallies is QAnon, the far-right conspiracy theory movement that baselessly claims, with stunning and growing support, that President Donald Trump is secretly battling a “deep state” cabal of Democratic politicians and A-listcelebrities who traffic children for sex.

Child sex trafficking is a dire problem: It happens in all 50 states, almost always at the hands of people the victims know and trust. But QAnon — in its virulent campaign to expose a supposed underground pedophilia ring run by the liberal elite — is exacerbating the very crisis it claims to be fighting. As the movement appropriates and sensationalizes the issue to recruit more followers into its conspiratorial web, legitimate anti-trafficking organizations are suffering significant collateral damage.

HuffPost spoke to employees at child welfare groups across the U.S. and beyond about the burdens that QAnon has placed upon them and their work. For many, debunking viral misinformation, mining through unhinged tips and warding off mob harassment has become part of the job — detracting from their ability to actually help kids in need.

“It’s out of control,” said one exasperated senior staffer at a national anti-trafficking organization based in Washington. “It absolutely makes our job more difficult.”

Enter Austin "At Your Own Risk" - Texas Billboards Warn Motorists Amid Police Cuts

A Texas police union secured space on two giant billboards along Interstate 35 entering Austin, Texas, that warns motorists they are about to enter a liberal city that has defunded local law enforcement, reported CBS News. The implications of defunding the police, as readers may know, is that violent crime surges, and police may not be able to respond to an emergency call, which explains why gun sales are soaring and ammo shortages persist. The next hot commodity will be bulletproof vests.

"Warning! Austin Police Defunded Enter at Your Own Risk," one billboard reads.

The second says, "Limited support next 20 miles," according to the Texas Municipal Police Association (TMPA), who recently had the signs erected after the city council slashed the Austin Police Department's budget in August.

TMPA, the largest law enforcement organization in Texas, was angered by the Austin City Council's vote to cut the police department's budget by $150 million with immediate cuts around $21.5 million.

"This reckless act, a political stunt by the city council pandering to the radical left, will do nothing but endanger the people of Austin," TMPA wrote in a Facebook post.

"As the largest police association in Texas, it is our duty and responsibility to stand up for the brave men and woman of the APD, as well as the other law enforcement agencies with jurisdiction within the city limits which will have less of APDs resources to depend on, and to raise public awareness of the dangers of defunding not just Austin, but any city across the U.S.," the post went onto say.

A Message from Mother Earth to Nancy Pelosi

Thunder shattered the evening quiet and lightning lit up the sky outside my office. I stayed at my computer feeling secure that the surge protector would manage the extra load. Suddenly my screen lit up with a strange message:

Speaker Pelosi:

This is Mother Earth and you’ve defamed me, something I will not tolerate. This week you said,

“Mother earth is angry. She’s telling us with hurricanes on the Gulf Coast, fires in the West, whatever it is… the climate crisis is real and has an impact.”

How dare you speak in my name? How dare you defame me to deflect from the miscalculations and loony policies of your California Democrat colleagues?

In ancient times I was known as the Goddess of Fresh Water and Fertility.

I gave California plenty of water to nourish the land and people, I gave you rain, but you threw it away, letting it drain into the sea instead of capturing it and treating it. Not only would you have lots of water if you did this, but you’d save money and electricity costs of pumping the water in from other states. What dams you do have, you let deteriorate so they pose an extreme hazard to those living near them, and you have not built adequate water storage facilities. Victor Davis Hanson, a true friend of mine, lays it out clearly.

Just as California’s freeways were designed to grow to meet increased traffic, the state’s vast water projects were engineered to expand with the population. Many assumed that the state would finish planned additions to the California State Water Project and its ancillaries. But in the 1960s and early 1970s, no one anticipated that the then-nascent environmental movement would one day go to court to stop most new dam construction, including the 14,000-acre Sites Reservoir on the Sacramento River near Maxwell; the Los Banos Grandes facility, along a section of the California Aqueduct in Merced County; and the Temperance Flat Reservoir, above Millerton Lake north of Fresno. Had the gigantic Klamath River diversion project not likewise been canceled in the 1970s, the resulting Aw Paw reservoir would have been the state’s largest man-made reservoir. At two-thirds the size of Lake Mead, it might have stored 15 million acre-feet of water, enough to supply San Francisco for 30 years. California’s water-storage capacity would be nearly double what it is today had these plans come to fruition. It was just as difficult to imagine that environmentalists would try to divert contracted irrigation and municipal water from already-established reservoirs. Yet they did just that, and subsequently moved to freeze California’s water-storage resources at 1970s capacities.[snip] The Green dream was not simply river restoration and beautification, however. Bay Area environmentalists also believed that vastly increased freshwater inflows would help oxygenate the San Francisco Delta, thereby enabling the survival of the Delta smelt, a three-inch baitfish, while ensuring that salmon could be reintroduced into the San Joaquin River watershed.

Ah yes, the delta smelt must be saved, even if the earth dies and the people on it must starve or flee to better-managed places.

Party of Darkness: Democrats continue bleak message while pivoting to global warming

Nancy Pelosi gathers with G7 leaders, Joe Biden issues statement suggesting wildfires are start of devastating long-term ruin of America.

The Party of Darkness is at it again.

After a summer of painting a bleak portrait of an America ravaged by pandemic and racial riots, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, presidential nominee Joe Biden and some big-name Democrat governors have pivoted to a new dark message: The Western wildfires are a harbinger of a future plagued by destruction from global warming.

Pelosi on Saturday delivered that message on the global stage as she hosted a virtual meeting with legislative leaders from G7 members Canada, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan.

"The climate crisis is the existential threat of our time, jeopardizing the health and well-being of every family in every community around the world," Pelosi and the other G7 leaders wrote in a joint declaration. "Atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations in 2020 are among the highest averages ever recorded. The planet suffered through the second hottest year ever in 2019."

Joe Biden echoed the message, connecting the wildfires in the West to global warming and a future of destruction.

"We absolutely must act now to avoid a future defined by an unending barrage of tragedies like the one American families are enduring across the West today," the former vice president said.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said there was no room any longer to deny, dispute or challenge the science behind climate change. "This is a climate damn emergency. This is real, and it's happening," he said as he toured the scorched remains of communities victimized in his own state by wildfires.

Republicans have blamed the fires on years of bad forest management that allowed large amounts of flammable debris to pile in forests without adequate clearing. In a nod to the GOP argument, Newsom acknowledged forestry practices were a contributing factor.

"That's one point but not the point," Newsom said, according to the BBC.

Washington State Gov. Jay Inslee, who unsuccessfully challenged Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, also on Friday blamed the fires on global warming while predicting an even bleaker future.

"This is not an act of God," he said. "This has happened because we have changed the climate of the state of Washington in dramatic ways."

President Trump offered a much more optimistic vision of a "great American comeback" during a rally Saturday night near Las Vegas. "On Nov. 3, you will save America," the president told cheering fans, predicting he will win the election.

Fort Jackson soldier, 29, found dead in barracks, marks 4th death at base in past year

Officials did not give a cause of death

A 29-year-old soldier in basic training was found dead in his barracks at Fort Jackson in Columbia, S.C., on Saturday, Army officials said, marking the fourth death of a soldier at the base in the past year.

The active-duty soldier from Wisconsin was not immediately identified. The base is holding a 48-hour training stand down following the death, the 1st Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment said in a statement.

“A loss of a loved one and teammate is never easy,” said Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Milford H. Beagle, Jr. “We extend our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Know we are providing comfort and assistance to all who knew him.”

While the cause of death was under investigation, the base said it was unrelated to COVID-19 and active field training exercise. No further details were immediately given.

Three other soldiers-in-training have died at the base within the past year.

An 18-year-old soldier from North Carolina died after experiencing a "medical emergency" ahead of a training exercise on Sept. 21, 2019.

Pvt. Conner J. McGurran, a 19-year-old Minnesota National Guard soldier, was found unresponsive at the base on Jan. 8 and later died, the Army Times reported.

In March, Pvt. Angel Cortes, a 29-year-old soldier from Connecticut, died after suffering a medical emergency while “conducting a non-strenuous activity,” according to the State.

Navy fires Lackland training center CO

The Navy fired the commanding officer of a Texas training center Friday.

Cmdr. Robert Arias was relieved of command of Naval Technical Training Center Lackland following the findings of an investigation, according to Navy spokesman Cmdr. James Stockman.

Stockman declined to say whether Arias faces further disciplinary action.

“The investigation was administrative in nature and it would be inappropriate to discuss further details while the matter is pending final decision,” Stockman told Navy Times.

Arias could not be reached for comment.

He will be temporarily reassigned to Naval Education and Training Command in Florida, while Cmdr. Brian Carroll will assume leadership duties at NTTC Lackland.

A New Mexico native, Arias enlisted in 1988 and commissioned through the limited duty officer program in 2000.

He served aboard several vessels at sea and deployed to Anbar province in Iraq, where he led the intercoastal waterway military and police transition teams, according to his command biography.

Sailor dies in DC hit and run

A Washington, D.C.-based sailor and K-9 handler was killed late last month after he was struck by a vehicle in the city, officials have confirmed.

Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Caleb S. Herndon, 21, was walking on Interstate 395 northbound near the exit ramp from the 9th Street tunnel at about 1:50 a.m. Aug. 23 when he was struck by a vehicle, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Herndon “was then struck by a second vehicle traveling westbound,” according to police.

The sailor was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

No arrests have been made and the case remains under investigation.

A Texas native, Herndon, had been assigned to Headquarters, Naval District Washington, since late June.

He had recently completed K-9 handling school and was supposed to get his working dog the week he died, according to his father, Jim Herndon.

Herndon had joined the Navy hoping to become a SEAL, but when he couldn’t immediately qualify for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training, he took to dog training, his father said.

“He just fell in love with it,” Jim Herndon said. “He told me, ‘Dad, I cannot wait to get there in the morning and I don’t want to leave in the afternoon.’”

Herndon had adopted a retired military Belgian Malinois named Otto that now lives with the Herndon family in Texas.

He was a man of faith who sought to help other people, Herndon’s father recalled.

“He wanted so bad to help people and was wired that way,” Jim Herndon said.

Mission K-9 Rescue has set up a donation page set up at his family’s request.

The group helps bring working dogs home and reunites them with their former handlers.

“Those that served with him, knew him, and loved him want to honor him by giving to the dogs and work he loved,” the page states.

“The entire Naval District Washington community is saddened by the loss of MA3 Caleb Scott Herndon,” Navy spokesman Edward Zeigler said in a statement. “We wish his family peace and comfort during this difficult time.”

Aussie minister warns foreign journos against ‘slanted view’ in spy row with Beijing, as cops crush lockdown dissent at home

Australia’s Home Affairs Minister, Peter Dutton, warned foreign journalists that they may be investigated if they give a “slanted view” of the country. Meanwhile, cops in Victoria have crushed lockdown protests with an iron fist.

Dutton’s comments came several days after the arrest of Cheng Lei, an Australian journalist with China’s CGTN broadcaster, and after the evacuation of two Australian journalists from China last week.

“If people are here as journalists and they’re reporting fairly on the news, then that’s fine,” Dutton told ABC TV on Sunday, adding that these journalists shouldn’t give “a slanted view to a particular community.” Dutton added that the Australian Security Intelligence Organisation – comparable to the British MI5 or American FBI – questioned some journalists this summer, but would not confirm if they were Chinese nationals, as had been reported.

Dutton’s comments came amid a diplomatic spat with China over the evacuation of the Australian journalists. Beijing has accused the Australian government of “interference in a Chinese legal case” by pulling them out of China. The minister didn’t directly address Chinese journalists in Australia, but indirectly cautioned any foreign reporters who may be “interfering or conducting espionage-type activities.”

However, they also come amid growing government authoritarianism in Australia. The state of Victoria has imposed one of the harshest lockdowns anywhere in the world, with citizens of Melbourne under an 8pm curfew (extended to 9pm from Monday) and forbidden from leaving home without a work permit. Police are permitted to enter property without warrants, and military troops and drones have been brought in to ensure compliance.
