A magistrate is a lay (generally not lawyers) judicial rĂ´le, typically hearing minor offenses and applications for binding over or bail in more serious cases.

 

In England, magistrates were typically people of “standing” in the community - mostly self righteous types (ex army officers and wives of the gentry) who would hang any offender had there been no legal constraints. I don’t know what they’re like these days - probably 50% Muslim and 50% LGBT activists, if the changes in society are reflected.
