BEAR FIRE: 14 DEAD SAYS BUTTE COUNTY SHERIFF

 

UPDATE 5:04 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, 2020 - We now know the names of three of the victims of the Bear Fire. Butte County sheriff released those names Sunday night. They are:

 

Khawar Bhatti, age 58 of Berry Creek

Millicent Catarancuic, age 77 of Berry Creek'

Josiah Williams, age 16 of Berry Creek

The identities of 11 other victims have yet to be released.

The size of the Bear Fire, also called the North Complex West Zone, is 74,200 acres. It is 18% contained. The entire North Complex of fires is 258,802 acres and is 26% contained. Butte County Sheriff Kory Honea said on Sunday that the number of people who died during the Bear Fire now stands at 14. As of Sunday, seven people remain unaccounted for.

 

On Sunday Sheriff Honea announced that there was one casualty they could confirm on Jack Coe Road in Berry Creek. Searchers discovered a body at the location after conducting a welfare check. The sheriff said it took working with Interpol to notify next-of-kin, as the family is in Pakistan. We will provide the name of the 58-year-old man when it is released in writing by the Sheriff's Office.

 

The North Complex West Zone is still threatening 23,356 structures. CAL FIRE announced Sunday that 253 homes have been destroyed and 21 were damaged. 39 businesses have been destroyed and two have been damaged. 125 other buildings have been destroyed and 15 have been damaged.
