The Trump administration adopted a general stance of support for Israeli positions. On May 3, 2017, Palestinian President Abbas visited the White House for the first time during the Trump administration.[46] According to Bob Woodward, citing as his source Rex Tillerson, Trump's early support for Israel wavered he had began to wonder whether Netanyahu might not be the major obstacle to a peace
agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.
On his visit to Israel on 22 May 2017 Trump met Netanyahu and was shown by the latter tapes that appeared to show Mahmoud Abbas advocating the killing of children. Netanyahu then asked him, 'And that's the guy you want to help?'. Trump was outraged by what he saw. After their meeting ended, Rex Tillerson was called in and shown the same material, a 'crudely forged video', and told the president the clips looked like fabrications. Trump remained convinced they were authentic.[47] On the following day, at his meeting with Abbas in Bethlehem, Trump then lashed out at the Palestinian leader, calling him a liar and murderer. Woodward appears to suggest that this disinformation was behind Trump's decision to close the PLO office in Washington and cut off aid to the organization. [48] [49][47] This occasion, on the 23 of May was Trump's first encounter with the Palestinian Authority.[50][51]
On December 6, 2017, Trump announced the U.S.'s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, a move condemned by Abbas, who described it as indicating US withdrawal from its mediation role.[52]
On September 10, 2018, Trump ordered the closure of the Palestinian office in Washington D.C., citing the PLO's lack of progress in the peace process.[53][54][55] The closure was condemned.[56] The mission was closed on October 11, 2018[57][58]
On October 18, 2018, United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced that the U.S. Consulate-General in Jerusalem would be merged into the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem. Pompeo announced that the US would continue to conduct relations with the Palestinians through a special Palestinian Affairs Unit inside the Embassy.[59] This announcement was criticized by Palestinian officials including Palestinian Authority chief negotiator Saeb Erekat as an endorsement of the Israeli claim to Jerusalem and "Greater Israel." [60][61][62][63]
On 31 January 2019, the U.S. confirmed it stopped all aid to Palestinians following a request from the Palestinians to do so for fear of future court actions against them as a result of the Anti-Terrorism Clarification Act allowing Americans to sue those receiving foreign aid in US for “acts of war”.[64]
On March 4, 2019, the Consulate-General ceased operating as an independent mission and was revamped as the Palestinian Affairs Unit, which will report to the Embassy.[65][66][67][68] In response, Saeb Erekat, the secretary-general of the PLO's Executive Committee called for the international community to boycott the new Palestinian Affairs Unit, regarding it as a "downgrade" and "assault" on the peace process.[69][70][71] Another Palestinian official Hanan Ashrawi claimed that the merger of the Consulate General into the Embassy represented an assault on Palestinian rights and identity.[72]

In Bob Woodward’s new 392-page chronicle of the Donald Trump presidency, Rage, the veteran Washington Post correspondent and author dives deep into some of the 45th president’s most consequential foreign and domestic policy choices. The book includes widely reported claims that Mr Trump knew how deadly Covid-19 was and chose to deliberately downplay it, putting the lives of millions at risk.
But elsewhere, Mr Woodward reports that Mr Trump had significant trouble distinguishing propaganda and partisan fantasy from reality.

California Representative Devin Nunes made headlines early last year for his repeated allegations that Obama administration officials had improperly “unmasked” the names of Trump associates, including former national security advisor Michael Flynn.
Unmasking is the process by which high-government officials can request to have the names of Americans caught on foreign surveillance – which are normally “masked” to protect privacy – revealed in order to get a full picture of the conversation being reviewed.
The oft-repeated allegations that “unmasking” was done improperly on the orders of Obama administration officials, although baseless, have made up the bulk of the amorphous conspiracy theory Trumpworld figures have dubbed “Obamagate”, and which Mr Trump – without evidence – has called the “greatest political crime in American history”.
But when then-director of national intelligence Dan Coats tried setting the record straight on unmasking – which is a common occurrence in intelligence collection and analysis – Mr Trump was not receptive to the facts.
“Mr president, I know Devin Nunes is trying to be doing everything he can to support you. But he passes information to you that turns out to be false. In the end, it hurts you. Devin has told you something that is not true,” Mr Coats said, according to Mr Woodward. He then suggested to Mr Trump that if he were to contact the ODNI to verify information provided by Mr Nunes, it would “put [Trump] in a better position” because Coats’s office could “assess whether or not what has been said is backed up by the evidence”.
But Mr Trump, Mr Woodward writes, was uninterested in such things, and instead responded: “Devin Nunes is the most courageous person in town.”
Mr Woodward added that Mr Trump also told others he believed the California Republican – who has never served in the US Armed Forces – deserved the Medal of Honor, which is highest decoration a US service member can be awarded. According to US law, it can only be bestowed upon military personnel for “conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty”.

According to Mr Woodward, Mr Coates said the greatest threat posed to the US national security apparatus is that Mr Trump wanted to ignore any process that utilised the government’s many career experts.
“In effect, and often literally,” he wrote, “the president said: I don't need that to be done. I don't need these people. I don't need a National Security Council. I just need myself, and perhaps three or four people I trust and work with.”
