I once lived next to a male model who was on the cover of GQ. He told me how he got into it: Nothing to do with talent, education, etc. He was a waiter and a connected photographer wanted to do him. He agreed to go to dinner but warned the photographer that he wasn't gay. Went to dinner, got propositioned, never did anything. Photographer made him a top model just because he liked him.
