Masks ‘more guaranteed’ to protect against COVID-19 than vaccine, CDC director says
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Director Robert Redfield said Wednesday that face masks may be more effective at protecting against coronavirus transmission than a vaccine. “We have clear scientific evidence [face masks] work,” Dr. Redfield told the Senate Appropriations Committee. “I might even go so far as to say that this face mask is more guaranteed to protect me against COVID than when I take a COVID vaccine.” Redfield said vaccine distribution will not begin until mid-2021. Until then, masks are “our best defense” against the virus. If the COVID-19 vaccine does not create an immune response, Redfield said, “the vaccine’s not going to protect me. This face mask will.” “So I do want to keep asking the American public to take the responsibility, particularly the 18- to 25-year-olds where we're seeing the outbreak in America continue … because we haven't got the acceptance, the personal responsibility that we need for all Americans," he said.
President Trump rarely wears a face mask in his roundtable discussions and campaign rallies. Democratic senators accused Trump of “rejecting” health advice, sending the public the message that masks do not help in limiting transmission. Redfield declined to comment on Trump’s behavior.
