Baucus then appeared on CGTN on May 12 to double down on his Hitler and McCarthy comparison, blaming the Trump administration for flaming "sheer demagoguery."

"[The current U.S. rhetoric] is somewhat reminiscent, nowhere close to that yet, somewhat reminiscent of the McCarthy era and somewhat reminiscent of Germany in the 1930s," he told CGTN.

The former ambassador also gave an exclusive interview to Global Times on May 14, where he said Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's claim that the virus may have originated in a Wuhan laboratory "makes no sense" and accused both Democrats and Republicans of being tough on China to score political points in an election year.

Baucus again appeared on CGTN on May 15, where he claimed that America is "sliding toward a form of McCarthyism" because the Trump administration is pressuring policymakers to be tough on China. The former ambassador did another CGTN media hit on May 16, this time appearing alongside his wife Melodee Hanes, who blamed the presidential election for making dialogue "difficult."

"There are a lot of pretty smart people in the United States who are not speaking up. People in office, moderates, especially moderates on the Republican side," Baucus said on May 15. "They are afraid to speak up, they are intimidated, intimidated by President Trump. And it's kind of sliding toward a form of McCarthyism—how it is politically incorrect to speak the truth, speak the truth to power."

When the Washington Free Beacon called the phone number listed for Baucus's home address, no one answered. A lawyer representing Baucus Group, the ambassador's consulting firm, also did not respond to a request for comment.

While Baucus rarely enjoyed this much attention from Chinese state media outlets after his retirement, this is not the first time he has spoken to Chinese media outlets in recent years. Baucus also gave an exclusive interview to People's Daily in March 2018, criticizing U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods as the "wrong policy" and "too confrontational." He has also spoken at events backed by the China-U.S. Exchange Foundation, a registered foreign agent of the Chinese government according to a 2018 congressional report.

Lohman, the Heritage Foundation expert, said that while Baucus has the right to appear on any domestic and foreign outlets, he should not have addressed a propaganda outlet with the same degree of candidness that he did with CNN.

"I think he must have gotten wrapped up in the media performances because when you shift from CNN to Global Times or CGTN, you've gone to an entirely new level," he said. "And there I think you just have to express yourself differently. It's not an appropriate place to air political differences."

Cal Cunningham Fuels Anti-Vaccine Conspiracies, Says He’d Be ‘Hesitant’ to Take

NC Senate hopeful is 'just asking questions' about potential COVID-19 vaccine

Andrew Stiles - SEPTEMBER 14, 2020 9:30 PM

Cal Cunningham, the Democrat running for Senate in North Carolina, said he would be "hesitant" to take a COVID-19 vaccine approved by the FDA, citing "underlying political and financial influences" in Washington and encouraging the American people to "ask questions."

"Yes, I would be hesitant," Cunningham said in response to a question about a potential vaccine during Monday night's debate against GOP incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis (R., N.C.). "But I'm gonna ask a lot of questions. I think that's incumbent on all of us right now."

Cunningham's answer could provide fuel for internet conspiracy theorists who have been sounding the alarm about a potential COVID-19 vaccine by suggesting that, among other things, wealthy individuals such as Bill Gates are plotting to implant microchips in every American under the guise of a government-run vaccination program.

Cunningham's skepticism regarding a potential vaccine runs contrary to the recommendations of medical experts, who have warned that public confidence and trust in institutions will be critical to any effort to inoculate the population. Americans shouldn't necessarily trust the FDA or the federal government, Cunningham suggested.

"I would have a lot of questions of the FDA," the Democrat said. "I think the American people have a lot of questions about the government of this country." If elected, Cunningham said he "would be asking questions not only about this vaccine, but also about the underlying political and financial influences that are leading to distorted decision-making in Washington."

Reframing one's position as simply a matter of "asking questions" is a popular tactic employed by conspiracy theorists when asked to confront the implications of their extremist beliefs.

Tillis slammed Cunningham's "irresponsible" rhetoric during the debate. "We just heard a candidate for the U.S. Senate look into the camera and tell 10 million North Carolinians he would be hesitant to take a vaccine. I think that that's irresponsible," the Republican said. "We are not going to release a vaccine that doesn't have the effectiveness and safety that the gold standard of the FDA requires."

Hollywood Director Judd Apatow: ‘China Has Bought Our Silence’

Jack Beyrer - SEPTEMBER 15, 2020 6:00 PM

Director Judd Apatow told MSNBC on Tuesday that China has "bought" the silence of Hollywood.

"Instead of us doing business with China and that leading to China becoming more free, what has happened is a place like China has bought our silence with their money," Apatow said. "They have just completely shut down critical content about human-rights abuses in China."

Apatow is an award-winning director famous for his role in creating smash comedy hits such as Superbad, Talladega Nights, Anchorman, and Step Brothers.

Unlike much of Hollywood, Apatow has also been an unflinching critic of China. "It is shameful that no US companies and very few politicians speak up about concentration camps in China," he tweeted last week. "The United States has abandoned the world when it comes to human rights."

Apatow works in an industry—filmmaking—that is one of the most infiltrated by the Chinese Communist Party. Last week, Disney's new Mulan adaptation stirred controversy for thanking CCP authorities with ties to the ongoing Uighur genocide in Xinjiang in the credits.

In July, a Washington Free Beacon report detailed the extent to which Beijing has moved into Hollywood. The CCP has ties to multiple private enterprises working in the American film industry, and filmmakers have been so concerned about Chinese market entry that in movies such as Top Gun, any anti-CCP imagery or plot devices have been rooted out.

These decisions have not gone unnoticed by many in Washington. Last week, Sen. Josh Hawley (R., Mo.) and 14 Republican lawmakers sent letters to Disney CEO Robert Chapek blasting Disney's cooperation with the Chinese regime during the filming of Mulan.

"Disney's whitewashing of the ongoing Uighur genocide is contrary to all of your company's supposed principles," Hawley wrote. "Your decision to uncritically approve this film's release rather than apologizing to those harmed by Disney's actions is reprehensible. Your decision to put profit over principle, to not just ignore the CCP's genocide and other atrocities but to aid and abet them, is an affront to American values."
