RIG FOR RED…………………………………..

SURFACING PROCEDURE

RIG FOR RED ; Meaning color lighting is used to maintain human vision when looking through a scope without having the brighter surface sunlight causing a loss of vision and to keep internal light of the sub from back shining through the scope if at night. Surfacing must be done with caution. The submarine is first brought to periscope depth and a thorough search is made of the surrounding area. When assured that surfacing is safe, the preliminary order, "Stand by to surface," warns the personnel that the signal may be expected. At the sounding of the signal, three blasts of the diving alarm, or the, passing of the word "Surface, Surface, Surface," the various actions necessary are performed.NOTE: Modern subs have both optical and advanced CCD camera type scopes. RIG FOR RED only applies to maintain human vision when using an optical scope but is still used as a sequencing command in the surfacing operation.

RIG FOR RED can also be used before using a scope for surface target I.D. and passive target acquisition while in SILENT RUNNING.

SILENT RUNNING: Silent running is used when in close proximity to a target for intelligence data, covert station positioning or while moving in on a target to get a firing solution for an attack. Once the attack is initiated the element of surprise is lost by the attacking sub. All quarters are secured, any and all operations or personnel movement not pertaining to the attack/operation are halted, loose objects are secured etc. Noise is the enemy due to sonar signatures giving away a position. NO COMS………….
