First Known Use Of Emoticons

The first substantiated used of an emoticon occured today in 1979. Computer scientist Scott E. Fahlman posted on an early message board with the suggestion that “:-)” would be a way of indicated a humorous or unserious post, whilst “:-(” would mark a post to be taken seriously.
