Louisville police declare state of emergency ahead of Breonna Taylor announcement
A soon-to-be-announced decision in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor has prompted the Louisville police to declare a state of emergency. Kentucky's Republican Attorney General Daniel Cameron is expected to make an announcement this week pertaining to Taylor's case after two weeks of grand jury deliberation. Interim Chief of Police Robert Schroeder instructed all of his officers to cancel any vacation days in the week ahead so “the appropriate level of staffing” could be ensured in case there is a violent reaction to the grand jury's decision. "The public may also see barriers being staged around downtown, which is another part of our preparations," Sgt. Lamont Washington said in the public announcement on Monday.
Taylor was shot to death when three plainclothes LMPD officers executed a no-knock search of Taylor's apartment. When officers opened the door, Taylor's boyfriend opened fire, believing there was an intruder, and police fired back, killing Taylor in the shootout. The officers were granted a warrant to search the apartment where they believed Taylor's ex-boyfriend, Jamarcus Glover, was staying on the premise that he was keeping drugs and money in the space. No illegal substances or money were found at the apartment upon inspection. Last week, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer announced the city would pay $12 million to Taylor's family.
