If House Embarks on New Impeachment Push, ‘We’ll Win Entire Election’, Trump Says

On Sunday, US Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi said that she is not ruling out launching a new impeachment proceeding against President Donald Trump in a bid to prevent the Senate from voting on POTUS’ Supreme Court nominee following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

US President Donald Trump said to Fox News that he would win the 3 November election even if he faces an impeachment aimed to bar his Supreme Court nominee from being confirmed to the post after Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death.

“I heard if I [nominate], they’re going to impeach me. So they’re impeaching me for doing what constitutionally I have to do. If they do that, we win [sic] all elections”, Trump claimed.

He argued that if House Democrats go ahead with their impeachment drive, his “numbers will go up.”

“I think we’ll win the entire election. I think we’re going to win back the House […] anyway”, POTUS suggested.

He spoke after Pelosi said in an interview with ABC News on Sunday that she does not exclude launching a new impeachment against Trump as a means of keeping the Senate from voting on the US president’s Supreme Court nominee.

"Well, we have our options. We have arrows in our quiver that I'm not about to discuss right now, but the fact is we have a big challenge in our country", she said, when asked if she considers impeachment a way of "stalling and preventing the Senate from acting on this nomination".

Pelosi accused Trump of threatening “to not even accept the results of the [November] election”, adding that the main goal now is to "protect the integrity of the election as we protect the American people from the coronavirus".

Democrats earlier noted that the next Supreme Court justice should be nominated after the 3 November election.

Later this week, Trump is expected to announce his choice of Supreme Court justice to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who passed away on Friday at the age of 87, due to cancer complications.

Last Year’s Impeachment of Trump

On 5 February, the Republican-majority US Senate voted to acquit POTUS after he was impeached by the US House for abuse of power and obstruction to Congress.

This followed developments in September 2019, when the Democrat-led House of Representatives launched an impeachment inquiry into the US president over his 25 July telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Trump reportedly asked officials in Kiev to probe rival presidential candidate Joe Biden, while threatening to hold back US military aid for Ukraine.

"Paper Gold No Longer As Important" - BofA Finds Physical Demand Now Key To Gold Prices

On a day where real yields are spiking, seemingly sparking a degrossing in gold futures, we found it rather noptable that BofA's Global Commodities Research team publish a note highlighting the fact that recent flow data suggests that paper gold is no longer as important as it used to be.

Specifically, BofA notes that the recent gold price rally has been driven by investors, who have steadily increased their exposure to the yellow metal, a dynamic that is, as such, not unusual.

Digging a bit deeper, positioning through futures was historically the marginal price driver, as these contracts used to be the most popular product through which non-commercial market participants invested in the precious metal.

Broadly speaking, as Chart 1 highlights, investor positions have trended higher since the precious metal bottomed out in 2018, so this was one element in the recent rally.

However, as Chart 2 illustrates, assets under management at physically-backed ETFs have also risen materially.

Indeed, the close correlation between those two metrics suggests that physically-backed ETFs have become the dominant drivers of gold quotations.

LISTEN: Nancy Pelosi Says ‘We Can Impeach’ Trump ‘Every Day of the Week for Anything He Does’

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told Kara Swisher of the New York Times in an interview released Monday that the House of Representatives can impeach President Donald Trump “every day of the week for anything he does.”

Swisher, a tech journalist with left-wing views, was pushing Pelosi to commit to doing more to fight back against President Trump, the Republican, and the conservative agenda.

The following exchange ensued:

Swisher: All right, but I’m going to press you one more time. What is your power to do this? I get the election, but you can get up more. You can speak out more. You can do more impeachments, things like that. Do you have enough power?

Pelosi: Well, we can impeach him every day of the week for anything he does. In fact, for —

Swisher: Why not?

Nancy Pelosi: — 200,000 people dying. Well, because look, the American people want to know what we’re doing that affects them directly.

Swisher: OK.

Republicans published a brief clip of that conversation:

The Constitution does not say a president can be impeached for “anything.” Rather, it says: “The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors.”

Pelosi also attacked Attorney General William Barr:

Bill Barr is a complete henchman. He’s a disgrace to the office he holds. He shouldn’t even be a lawyer. He should be disbarred. We’ve held him in contempt of Congress. But he is an employee, and the villain here is Donald Trump. And that is what we have to do is to make sure that he is not reelected.

Pelosi predicted confidently that if the election were to be held today, Democrats would sweep both houses of Congress and the White House.

The interview was the inaugural episode of Swisher’s new podcast, Sway.

Furious Mayors Of New York, Seattle And Portland Respond To Trump's "Anarchy" Designation

Update (1534ET): Mayors of the three cities targeted by AG Barr's order have released a joint statement blasting the Trump Administration's label of "anarchist" cities.

The cities’ mayors - Bill de Blasio of New York, Ted Wheeler of Portland and Jenny Durkan of Seattle - rejected the threat as "thoroughly political and unconstitutional."

"The President is playing cheap political games with Congressionally directed funds," they wrote in a joint statement. "Our cities are bringing communities together; our cities are pushing forward after fighting back a pandemic and facing the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression, all despite recklessness and partisanship from the White House."

Barr accused the mayors of endangering the lives of innocent citizens by treating the vandals and criminals mixed in with the 'peaceful protesters' far too gently.

"When state and local leaders impede their own law enforcement officers and agencies from doing their jobs, it endangers innocent citizens who deserve to be protected, including those who are trying to peacefully assemble and protest," Barr said in the release. "We cannot allow federal tax dollars to be wasted when the safety of the citizenry hangs in the balance."

Gov Cuomo also dismissed reports of the administration's plans. “Is it going to happen? No, because it’s illegal and it’s unconstitutional,” Cuomo said in a call with reporters. "But it’s politics. It’s politics for the next few weeks going up to the November election. That’s all this is."

The governor compared it with the administration’s previous threats to withhold money from so-called "sanctuary cities", an issue which New York won against the administration in court.

"If they actually do this, we will challenge it legally, and he will lose again," Cuomo said.

City law department head Jim Johnson insisted: "The president does not have the authority to change the will of Congress."

"We’re prepared to fight this in court if he actually takes concrete steps to withhold federal funds. What we have in New York City is not anarchy. What we have is a city moving forward under difficult circumstances.”

The cities targeted are NYC, Seattle and Portland.

Mitch McConnell debunks 'myth' that the GOP won't have time to confirm a SCOTUS nominee

It took him about 30 seconds

Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell took to the floor of the Senate Monday to debunk claims that the Senate does not have sufficient time to consider a Supreme Court nominee before the general election in November.

Citing historical precedent, McConnell argued that the Senate has plenty of time to confirm a nominee and promised that there will be a vote on President Donald Trump's nominee this year.

"President Trump's nominee for this vacancy will receive a vote on the floor of the Senate," McConnell said, reiterating a statement he issued Friday after the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, 87, passed away from complications due to pancreatic cancer.

"Now already, some of the same individuals who tried every conceivable dirty trick to obstruct Justice [Neil] Gorsuch and Justice [Brett] Kavanaugh are lining up to proclaim the third time will be the charm," he continued.

"The American people are about to witness an astonishing parade of misrepresentations about the past, misstatements about the present, and more threats against our institutions from the same people who've already been saying for months — well before this — already been saying for months they want to pack the court."

Already, Democrats and some in the media have misrepresented the so-called "McConnell rule," claiming the Republicans are hypocrites for promising to move forward with a Supreme Court nomination during an election year after previously refusing to consider President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland to fill Justice Scalia's vacancy on the court in 2016. Though Democrats say McConnell's 2016 position was no Supreme Court confirmations during an election year, McConnell's actual position was that if the presidency and the Senate majority are of different political parties and cannot agree on a nominee, then the American people may resolve the matter with an election.

This year there is a GOP majority in the Senate and President Trump is a Republican president. Republicans have the constitutional power to fill a Supreme Court presidency and they say it is their obligation to do so.

McConnell also addressed "incorrect" claims that the Senate does not have time to complete the confirmation process before the election.

"We are already hearing incorrect claims that there is not sufficient time to examine and confirm a nominee," McConnell said. "We can debunk this myth in about 30 seconds."

"As of today there are 43 days until Nov. 3 and 104 days until the end of this Congress," McConnell said. "The late iconic Justice John Paul Stevens was confirmed by the Senate 19 days after this body formally received his nominations — 19 days from start to finish."

Australia's coronavirus lockdown strategy worked. Could this be a model for the US?

(CNN)When Daniel Andrews, premier of the Australian state of Victoria, declared a lockdown over the coronavirus, some detractors on the right labeled him a "dictator" and said he was trying to build "a gulag."

But Andrews a Labor Party politician who has run Australia's second-largest state since 2014 has remained popular with Victorians throughout the lockdown, local polls show. And this week, his hardline approach was thoroughly vindicated.

On Sunday, Victoria recorded just 11 new coronavirus cases, down from over 670 at the height of the most recent outbreak last month. Next week, Melbourne will begin lifting some restrictions if new cases remain below a fortnightly average of 50 per day. A nightly curfew is slated to remain in effect until October 26.

"We can do this," Andrews tweeted Sunday, echoing his words at the beginning of the lockdown: "We are Victorians – and we will get through this as Victorians. With grit, with guts and together."

And while it may have provoked outrage from some elements of the Australian media, and criticism from Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Victoria's experience shows once again that targeted lockdowns are effective in containing the coronavirus: driving down infections, relieving pressure on hospitals and medical staff, and creating space for contact tracing and mass testing.

This was first shown in China, where the government imposed an intense lockdown on Wuhan, the city where cases of the virus were first detected late last year. Wuhan spent 76-days under lockdown, which was finally lifted as the daily caseload slowed to a trickle.

That was back in April, and now Wuhan is basically back to normal, even able to host massive water park raves without much concern. And the model has been successfully applied to other cities across China, including the capital Beijing, suppressing new spikes as they appear and keeping national figures down.

"The Covid-19 epidemic in our country has gone through four waves," Wu Zunyou, chief epidemiologist at the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said Saturday. "Besides the first wave (in Wuhan), the other epidemic waves were clusters that were regional and small-scale and were effectively controlled."

For some lockdown skeptics, China's experience was easy to dismiss: the country is an authoritarian, one-party state, and its methods could not necessarily be applied in democracies.

But the situation in Victoria proves that the lockdown strategy does work elsewhere, and that, given the proper information and reassurances, people are willing to make the sacrifices required to contain the virus.

With the outbreak in Victoria contained, the number of cases throughout the rest of Australia has continued to trend down. On Sunday, New South Wales, which includes Sydney, reported four new cases, while Queensland state reported just one.

New Zealand too, which on Monday began reducing social distancing regulations after daily cases dropped to zero, has seen positive results from lockdowns, enabling the country to return to relative normality far faster than nations which did not take such measures.

Elsewhere, however, lockdown strategies have been less successful, with partial closures bringing with them the misery of a full lockdown while not actually containing infections. This could make it far more difficult to introduce further restrictions in future, such as when infections spike in winter months, as most experts believe will happen.

There is also considerable political resistance to lockdowns, or even partial shutdowns, in some countries, particularly the United States, where last week Attorney General William Barr said a nationwide closure would be the "greatest intrusion on civil liberties" in history "other than slavery."

Potential lockdowns have also provoked backlash in the European Union and United Kingdom in recent days, despite a spike in case numbers across the continent.

An earlier version of this story incorrectly suggested that authorities in Melbourne would consider lifting a nighttime curfew next week. The curfew is currently in effect until October 26.
