Pair arrested after missing person found dismembered in lake at San Luis Obispo Co. golf course

Updated: Sep 22, 2020 / 04:30 PM PDT

A man and a woman have been arrested after a person missing since 2018 was found dismembered in a lake at a San Luis Obispo County golf course, officials said Tuesday.

The remains were discovered Monday by a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office dive team at a Nipomo golf course in the 1400 block of Golf Course Lane, officials said in a news release.

Authorities said the victim was missing since 2018, when the homicide likely occurred, but did not release the person’s identity. It is unclear how the person died.

Santa Maria residents Kimberly Machleit, 35 and Donald Anderson, 37, were arrested early Tuesday after detectives served a warrant in the 2200 block of Professional Parkway.

Machleit was booked on suspicion of murder with special circumstances and conspiracy, and is being held on $2 million bail, officials said.

Anderson was booked on suspicion of accessary to murder and is being held on $1 million bail.

Though the investigation is ongoing, officials believe the victim was killed in Santa Maria in December 2018, dismembered and eventually disposed of at the golf course.

“The suspects and the victim knew each other and this was not a random act,” officials said without elaborating.

Anyone with additional information about the killing can call the Sheriff’s Office tip line at 805-681-4171 or visit SBSheriff.org.

Not a Random Act: Four Charged in Murder of Iowa Man Found Burning in Ditch

Iowa authorities said Tuesday no evidence suggests the gruesome slaying of the 41-year-old Black man was motivated by race.

Four people have been charged in connection with the death of Michael Williams, a 41-year-old Black man whose burning body was found in a ditch last week, Iowa authorities announced Tuesday.

Officers said they believe Williams was strangled on Sept. 12, and his death was “not a random act of violence,” as he’d known at least one of the suspects for years.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said four suspects—Steven Vogel, 31, Julia Cox, 55, Roy Garner, 57, and Cody Johnson, 29—have been charged in connection with Williams’ death. Vogel, who is described as a “known acquaintance” of Williams, has been charged with first-degree murder and abuse of a corpse, while the other three face charges for abuse of corpse, destruction of evidence, and accessory after the fact. All four individuals are currently in police custody.
