California to ban sales of gasoline cars by 2035

California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, signed an executive order to ban the sales of new passenger vehicles with internal combustion engines from 2035 in the state’s latest push towards a cleaner energy future.

The Los Angeles Times reported the order has gone to the California Air Resources Board for implementation, along with stipulations that would reduce the sales of ICE trucks.

“In the next 15 years we will eliminate in the state of California the sales of internal combustion engines,” the Governor said at a news conference before signing the executive order. “If you want to reduce asthma, if you want to mitigate the rise of sea level, if you want to mitigate the loss of ice sheets around the globe, then this is a policy for other states to follow.”

California is the biggest single car market in the States and the biggest EV market. Like other car markets, however, sales there so far this year have been stifled by the pandemic and the movement restrictions it necessitated. During the first half of the year, sales of plug-in vehicles in California fell by 17.1 percent on the year. The broader car market declined more sharply, at 26.9 percent in that period.

Lawsuit blames Facebook for Kenosha violence, claims it failed to prevent ‘calls to arms’ from spreading

A lawsuit has been filed against Facebook with the Wisconsin federal court. The social media giant stands accused of enabling the Kenosha shooting by allowing “white supremacists” to “thrive” on its platform.

Facebook has failed to promptly remove the so-called militias “Kenosha Guard” and “Boogaloo Bois” from the social network, the lawsuit filed by four activists, including Hannah Gittings, a partner of Anthony Huber killed in the Kenosha shooting, said. The tech giant allowed the groups to “recruit” new members through violent racist rhetoric and “publicly displayed” a desire to kill Black Lives Matter (BLM) protesters, it added.

The incident occurred in Kenosha, Wisconsin, on August 25 during riots sparked by the earlier police shooting of an African American, Jacob Blake, which left him paralyzed.

Dallas lawmakers approve $7mn cut to police overtime budget despite ‘violent crime uptick’ & mayor’s protest

The Dallas City Council has voted to slash the overtime budget for the city’s police department by some $7 million, overriding vocal opposition from Democratic Mayor Eric Johnson, who has resisted calls to defund law enforcement.

City lawmakers passed the budget cut in an 11-4 vote on Wednesday evening, taking a sizable portion of the department’s total $24 million overtime fund and investing it into other “public safety” efforts, such as better public lighting in crime-ridden areas.

Mayor Johnson has repeatedly opposed the move, labeling the measure “police defunding,” which he said was not the right decision as Dallas faces an “uptick” in violent crime.

“I don’t know how any of us can look at that and say it’s the right time to cut back on police overtime,” Johnson told city council members earlier this month.

Tesla Inc. sued to block the Trump Administration from collecting tariffs on parts the electric carmaker imports from China.

Tesla filed the suit Monday in the U.S. Court of International Trade in New York, seeking an order declaring the duties unlawful and a refund, with interest, of amounts it has already paid.

The company (TSLA) is challenging actions by U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, who is named as a defendant in the case.

Lighthizer’s office last year denied Tesla’s bid to be exempted from tariffs of 25% on the Chinese-made computer and display screens it uses in its Model 3 electric car. At the time, Tesla complained the increased costs imposed by the tariffs would cause it economic harm. In 2018, the company estimated that increased tariffs on parts from China would decrease gross profit by $50 million in the fourth quarter of the year.

The Trump administration’s expansion of tariffs on imports from China, under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974, has drawn hundreds of suits in the Court of International Trade.

Lighthizer’s office didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment on the suit.

The case is Tesla Inc. v. U.S., 20-03142, U.S. Court of International Trade (New York).
