‘War on free enterprise & expression’: Trump tears into social media firms for ‘abusing’ conservatives on behalf of ‘Radical Left’

US President Donald Trump and Attorney General William Barr have gone on the warpath against Big Tech, unveiling proposed reforms to the firms’ Section 230 liability that would curtail their ability to effect political censorship.

Singling out Twitter’s censorship of “conservative views,” the president warned the major tech platforms that the days of their exercising unrestrained political influence were numbered. He was speaking on Wednesday at a roundtable discussion with Attorney General William Barr, nine of his Republican state counterparts, and Senator Josh Hawley (R-Missouri), one of Congress’ most vocal critics of Big Tech.

Big Tech has “used their power to engage in unscrupulous business practices while simultaneously waging war on free enterprise and free expression,” Trump told the assembled officials.

Chinese Defense Ministry Slams Pentagon Chief Esper Over Digital Surveillance Claims

Previously, the US defense secretary claimed that China is “deploying” and “honing” its “surveillance apparatus” in order to support “targeted repressions” against certain ethnic group within the country.

Chinese authorities have stepped forward to address claims regarding the country's alleged activities in the field of digital surveillance that were made earlier this month by US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper.

Speaking at the virtual Joint Artificial Intelligence Center symposium on 9 September, Esper argued that Beijing is "constructing a 21st-century surveillance state designed to wield unprecedented control over its own people", and that China is already "deploying" and "honing" its "surveillance apparatus to support the targeted repression of its Muslim Uighur population".

"As China scales this technology, we fully expect it to sell these capabilities abroad, enabling other autocratic governments to move toward a new era of digital authoritarianism", he said.

In response, Chinese Ministry of Defense's spokesman Senior Colonel Tan Kefei described these accusations as "false and groundless", adding that China "firmly opposes these statements and hopes the US will properly handle relations between the two militaries", as China Daily put it.

Qatar Eyes Normalisation With Israel in Exchange for Lifting of Gulf Boycott Against It, Source Says

Qatar is poised to seal a deal with Israel as early as next month, says a source involved in the talks, adding that when it happens, it will present a drastic change from the current position of Doha that right now negates the possibility of recognising the Jewish state without reaching a solution on the Palestinian front.

In a confidential talk with Sputnik, an anonymous source in the Gulf that's connected to the highest echelons of government in several countries, said Doha is now mulling over the option of normalising ties with Israel with the mediation of the US.

The revelation comes amid a barrage of criticism that has been directed at the United Arab Emirates for reaching an agreement with Israel; one of the loudest voices was that of Qatar.

"The State of Qatar affirmed its firm position on the Palestinian issue, which stipulates ending the Israeli occupation and establishing the State of Palestine with Jerusalem as its capital," said the country's foreign minister in a statement to Qatar News Agency, suggesting that a pact with the Jewish state was out of the question.

Apart from being vocal about the deal and its stance on the "Palestinian cause", Qatari media has also launched a massive media campaign aimed at de-legitimising the UAE and harming its stance on the international arena.

Speaking about the possible deal between Qatar and Israel, the source explained it might shape as early as next month, becoming a third Gulf state to ink an official deal with the Jewish state.
