Taiwan Holds Anti-Landing Drill on Frontline Island With China
By Reuters, Wire Service Content Sept. 25, 2020, at 5:42 a.m.
TAIPEI (REUTERS) - Taiwan's armed forces have held anti-landing drills on one of its offshore islands close to China amid rising tensions with Beijing, the island's defence ministry said on Friday, showing images of a cannon firing and soldiers loading the guns.
China has stepped up its military activities near Taiwan which it claims as its own territory, including flying fighter jets across the unofficial mid-line of the sensitive Taiwan Strait, which combat aircraft normally don't breach.
China says it has been reacting to what Beijing has called "collusion" between Taiwan and the United States, and to protect China's sovereignty, responding to U.S. Undersecretary for Economic Affairs Keith Krach's visit last week to Taipei.
Taiwan's Defence Ministry said the drills to repel a landing took place on the Matsu archipelago, which lies just offshore the Chinese city of Fuzhou.
"Whether the engine of a fighter plane or the rumbling of artillery, it is a reassuring sound for the national army that is defending the homeland," it said in a post on its Facebook page.
The drills took place across the archipelago involving the use of cannons and machine guns, the ministry added, accompanied by pictures of the exercises.
"Please give the greatest applause to these officers and soldiers! Be our strongest backers!" it said.

India to bolster navy, counter Chinese Indian Ocean expansion
India has also stepped up military, diplomatic cooperation with U.S., France, Australia, and Japan
By Eric Chang, Taiwan News, Contributing Writer
2020/09/25 15:45
TAIPEI (Taiwan News) — New Delhi aims to bolster its naval capabilities and increase cooperation with other like-minded democracies to counter Beijing’s growing assertiveness.
India is increasing joint naval exercises with the U.S. and its allies while building new ships and establishing a network of coastal surveillance outposts that would allow the country to monitor maritime traffic in the Indian Ocean, according to the Wall Street Journal. The Indian Ocean connects China to its main sources of oil and gas in the Middle East and important markets in Europe — and while China’s navy is quickly expanding, it still has limited capabilities to operate far from home.
India’s military has traditionally focused on its land borders with Pakistan and China, but over the last 10 years attention has been shifted to the Indian Ocean, as foreign trade increases and Beijing’s influence among other South Asian nations has grown. More recently India has stepped up military and diplomatic cooperation with the U.S., France, Australia, and Japan in a bid to counter China’s growing dominance in Asia.
In July, the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group held joint exercises with the Indian navy near India’s Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

How British grannies are spreading QAnon conspiracy theory
memes on Facebook
9/25/2020 6:11:23 AM
(MENAFN - The Conversation) A headteacher in Stoke-on-Trent told me that, alongside ensuring a COVID-safe return to school for her pupils this September, she's having to reassure parents that their children will not be forcibly taken away and isolated in a secret location if they start coughing in class.
The headteacher keeps getting sent a Facebook post warning parents to 'wake up' to the threat in the UK's Coronavirus Act. 'Is this true, can you take my child?' she is asked.
The Facebook post those parents had seen began going viral mid-August. It's one of several similar posts seen in the UK and Australia, and follows a pattern in many posts linked to the QAnon conspiracy theory. These often include a direct appeal to parents, challenging the reader to do their own research to 'prove' the veracity of the claim, a call to defend individual rights against big government, elites, or some undefined 'they'.
Part of a Facebook post from August 11 that was marked as false information by Facebook. via Facebook
Despite being quickly fact-checked and tagged as false, this and related posts which use the hashtag #SaveTheChildren are still circulating and the phrase 'covid act 2020 children in school' still comes up as an autofill option if you search for 'covid act' on Google.

The power of memes
For the past five years, my research has looked at how strangers talk with each other about politics on Facebook. I've focused on four English constituencies – Stoke-on-Trent Central, Burton and Uttoxeter, Bristol West and Brighton Pavilion – tracking conversations through public pages, posts and public information on people's timelines and profiles.
Through the 2015, 2017 and 2019 UK general elections, I saw the increased polarisation of those Facebook conversations and with it increased incivility, partisanship and sectarianism. I was struck by the rising use of memes and how a handful of core themes made their way from meme to belief. During the 2019 election, I noticed how memes from far right US Facebook pages were being posted and spread via people in the UK constituencies I was studying.
I recently decided to explore how the upcoming US election might be translating into partisan ideas on Facebook in the UK. I decided to focus on one meme, and the individual Facebook users who cared enough about that issue to share or comment publicly – and see where it took me.
So, in late August, I returned to Facebook after a seven-month gap and picked the meme that happened to be at the top of my timeline – a post from the group Migrant Watch shared by the page of UKIP Brighton & Hove. This was consistently one of the most active meme-seeders among the constituency party Facebook groups I follow.
I'd found links during the last election between the active seeding of anti-migrant, anti-immigration memes by UK users and US far-right organisations and individuals, and so I expected to find similar links through that meme. But what I hadn't expected to see was for the meme to lead me to UK mums and grandmothers engaging with QAnon conspiracy theories from the US.

Why is the US upset with the Vatican's deal with China?
Washington says the Holy See is endangering its moral authority with its Beijing pactBen JosephBen JosephUpdated:
September 25, 2020 09:59 AM GMT
What the Vatican and Beijing started as an experiment has turned out to be successful by their own standards.
Officials in Rome and Beijing are now confidently doing their homework for an extension of the 2018 Vatican-China deal on the appointment of bishops. The extension is expected to be signed next month.
Caught in the new bonhomie between the Catholic Church and communist China are the US presidential election and Taiwan, which China claims as its own and vows to use force, if necessary, to annex it.
Since the deal, the Vatican has been noticeably silent on Taiwan, an island lying across the Taiwan Strait. Experts say the Church is working towards one unified Catholic Church in China in line with Beijing’s “one China” policy.
The Donald Trump administration has strengthened engagement with Taiwan before the US presidential election in November.

Vatican announces surprise resignation of top cardinal
AFP Vatican City, Holy See Sep 25, 2020, 02.05 PM(IST)
One of the most influential Vatican cardinals, Angelo Becciu from Italy, resigned his position unexpectedly on Thursday, the Holy See announced without explanation.
"The Holy Father accepted the resignation from the office of Prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints and from the rights connected to the Cardinalate, presented by His Eminence Cardinal Giovanni Angelo Becciu," a one-line statement late on Thursday said.

After a career as a Vatican emissary, Becciu has worked for the last six years as the Substitute for General Affairs, a role akin as chief of staff which means he sees Pope Francis daily and is one of his most trusted aides.
The 72-year-old was named as a cardinal in summer 2018 and has also had responsibility for the department that oversees beatifications and sainthoods.
His surprise resignation could be a sanction.
He has been linked in the past to an investigation underway within the Vatican over the last year into a property development in the exclusive Chelsea area of London which was paid for with offshore funds and companies.
The process to invest in the scheme to build luxury apartments began in 2014 when Becciu was in the Vatican secretariat, the central bureaucracy of the Holy See.
The Vatican's police force raided the offices of the secretariat last year to seize financial documents and computers, while five members of staff were suspended.
Becciu defended the purchase at the beginning of the year during an interview.

Vatican cardinal in charge of saint making resigns amid
financial scandal
BY KAELAN DEESE - 09/24/20 06:47 PM EDT
The Vatican's cardinal in charge of naming saints, Angelo Becciu, resigned Thursday amid a financial scandal allegedly tied to him.
Pope Francis accepted Becciu's resignation late Thursday, though no details were provided about the reasoning behind his leave, The Associated Press reported.
Becciu is the former No. 2 in the Vatican's secretariat of state and has reportedly been implicated in a financial scandal surrounding the Vatican's involvement in a London real estate deal.
The deal resulted in the loss of millions of euros in fees paid by the Holy See to middlemen.
Several Vatican officials, as well as the middlemen, are under investigation by the Vatican prosecutor. However, Becciu is not.
Becciu has defended the efficacy of the initial investment and denied any wrongdoing.

FBI official on Mueller team said Flynn prosecution had
'get Trump' attitude, collusion probe was 'not there'
FBI official William Barnett was assigned to lead the bureau's original investigation into Michael Flynn
By Brooke Singman | Fox News
Published 25 mins ago
An FBI official who served on Robert Mueller’s team said he believed the special counsel’s prosecution of former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn was part of an attitude to “get Trump,” and that he did not wish to pursue a Trump-Russia collusion investigation as it was “not there" and considered it to be a "dead end."
FBI agent William J. Barnett made the comments during an interview on Sept. 17 at the Justice Department, before Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri Jeffrey Jensen, who was tapped by Attorney General Bill Barr to review the case against Flynn. Jensen has joined U.S. Attorney John Durham’s team in his review of the origins of the Trump-Russia probe. Those comments have surfaced in new government documents.
DURHAM ASSUMED PARTS OF JOHN HUBER'S CLINTOUN FOUNDATION REVIEW: SOURCE
Fox News reviewed Barnett’s FBI 302, which was filed by the U.S. government early Friday as part of the Flynn case.
Barnett, during his interview, detailed his work at the FBI, and his assignment to the bureau’s original cases against Flynn and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort. Barnett said the Flynn investigation was assigned the code name “Crossfire Razor,” which was part of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation — the bureau’s code name for the original Trump-Russia probe.
Barnett told investigators that he thought the FBI’s Trump-Russia probe was “opaque” and “with little detail concerning specific evidence of criminal events.”
“Barnett thought the case theory was ‘supposition on supposition,’” the 302 stated.
Barnett told investigators that the “predication” of the Flynn investigation was “not great,” and that it “was not clear” what the “persons opening the case wanted to ‘look for or at.’”
Barnett told investigators that after six weeks of investigating, he was “still unsure of the basis of the investigation concerning Russia and the Trump campaign working together, without a specific criminal allegation.”
Barnett began asking agents what they thought “the end game” was in the Flynn investigation, and suggested that they interview Flynn “and the case be closed unless derogatory information was obtained.”
Barnett said he was “cautioned against” an interview of Flynn, due to concerns that it would “alert Flynn as to the investigation.” Barnett, though, told investigators that he believed that Flynn’s position as White House national security adviser in the incoming Trump administration “offered an opportunity for the FBI to conduct the interview without alerting any suspicion and Flynn would see such an interview as being standard procedure.”
Barnett ran the request to interview Flynn “up the chain,” but said the request was denied.
Barnett described the FBI’s investigation into Flynn as “top down” meaning that “direction concerning the investigation was coming from senior officials.”
Barnett told investigators that he believed then-Deputy FBI Director Andrew McCabe was “directing” the Flynn investigation.
Barnett, at the time, said that he believed the investigation was “problematic and could result in an inspector general investigation.”
“Barnett still did not see any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and the Russian government,” the 302 stated. “Barnett was willing to follow any instructions being given by the deputy director as long as it was not a violation of the law.”
Barnett told investigators he believed the investigation into Flynn was a “check the box exercise, making sure all bases were covered, before the case was closed,” and said he “did not” think the case “was leading or headed toward prosecution.”
Barnett said that he believed there were grounds to investigate “the other three subjects in Crossfire Hurricane, however, he thought Flynn was the ‘outlier.’” But Barnett, in the spring of 2017, gave a briefing on the Flynn investigation to a group of attorneys from the Special Counsel’s Office, including Jeanne Rhee.

Kentucky’s only Black female legislator arrested on felony rioting
charge at Breonna Taylor protest
By Jaclyn Peiser
September 25, 2020 at 6:44 a.m. EDT
As the only Black female representative in the Kentucky Capitol, state Rep. Attica Scott (D) took action after the death of Breonna Taylor, who was fatally shot by police raiding her home in March. In August, Scott proposed Breonna’s Law, a bill that would end no-knock warrants statewide. And when a grand jury decided not to indict the officers for Taylor’s death, Scott joined hundreds of protesters in the streets of Louisville.
On Thursday night, Louisville police arrested Scott along with a handful of other protesters near First Unitarian Church and the Louisville Free Public Library, which had allegedly been set on fire, according to a police report reviewed by WAVE. The state representative received a felony charge of first-degree rioting and two misdemeanors for failure to disperse and unlawful assembly, the Louisville Courier-Journal reported. It is unclear if Scott was released on bail or is still in custody.

Kim Jong Un apologizes in letter to Seoul for shooting of South
Korean official
By Jake Kwon, CNN
Updated 3:31 AM ET, Fri September 25, 2020
Seoul (CNN)North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has apologized for the death of a South Korean government worker who was shot dead by North Korean troops after crossing a maritime border between the two countries.
In a letter sent to South Korea's Blue House Friday morning, North Korea said units responded to a call that an unidentified male was found floating on an object in the sea. The letter claims about 10 rounds were fired at the man after he did not comply with a soldier's demand to identify himself and subsequent warning shots.
North Korea says only a pool of blood remained on the floating object after the shots were fired. After soldiers presumed the man to be dead, they burned the floating object on site per North Korea's Covid-19 disease prevention measures.
"Chairman Kim Jong Un asked to convey that he feels very sorry that instead of giving aid to our compatriots in the South who is struggling with Covid epidemic, we have given President Moon and our compatriots in the South a great disappointment with this unseen misfortune in our sea," the letter read, according to the Blue House.
The statement added that North Korea has strengthened its maritime surveillance and apologized for "an incident that will clearly negatively impact inter-Korean relation."
According to Lt. Gen. Ahn Young-ho, a top official with South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff, a worker with the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries went missing in waters 1.9 kilometers (1.2 miles) south of the Yeonpyeong Islands on September 21.
