Abacus Data poll reveals stable support for Trudeau and Liberals as Parliament returns

OTTAWA — A new poll suggests Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his Liberal government have a firm layer of voter support despite a wobbly summer that saw his team engulfed by a contracting scandal.

The Abacus Data poll given exclusively to POLITICO arrives as Parliament reconvenes in Ottawa and Trudeau looks to reset his government’s agenda with a speech from the throne. All of this, of course, is unfolding as the country contends with the coronavirus crisis and the dawn of a second wave.

The poll, conducted from Sept. 18-21, found 35 percent of respondents would support the Liberals in an election. It put them just ahead of the Conservatives at 32 percent and the New Democrats at 17 percent with numbers that had barely budged since Abacus' previous survey at the start of the month.

“The patterns of opinion provincially and federally tend to underscore that people are drawn towards stability over disruption in this period of time,” Abacus chair Bruce Anderson said in a statement. “Events that might in other circumstances carry more political charge seem to be ignored by many people, as the focus is on getting through a day, a week, a month at a time, and hoping for a solution to the pandemic before too many more months.”

Trudeau’s popularity: The prime minister’s image in the eyes of the respondents remained divided with 40 percent saying they had a positive view of him, compared to 39 percent who had a negative impression. The poll said while the number was down from springtime highs, it was still above its level before the start of the pandemic.

Opposition leaders: The poll found that impressions of Conservative Leader Erin O’Toole, who took the party’s top job last month, took a bit of a hit during the past couple of weeks with 23 percent of respondents holding a negative view of him — up from 19 percent on Sept. 3 — compared to 22 percent who had a positive view. For NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, 34 percent of those polled had a positive impression — down three percent from the start of the month — compared to 25 percent on the negative side.

Support for the federal government: The survey suggested Canadians generally had a favorable impression of the government, with 46 percent in approval versus 37 percent who disapproved.

Noteworthy numbers: Abacus highlighted the gap in the poll’s findings between the federal government’s approval rating of 46 percent and Liberal support among voters of 35 percent. “It suggests the Liberal vote share has plenty of room to grow and may be underperforming,” said the report that accompanied the survey results. For comparison, the report noted the Trudeau government’s approval rating was 36 percent just before the start of last year’s election campaign. Trudeau’s Liberals ended up attracting 34 percent of the popular vote.

A glance at the methodology: Abacus surveyed 1,500 people for the poll.

Trump Announces He Will Only Leave Office If A Challenger Beats Him In Ritual Combat

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Clad in tribal furs and leather, President Trump shouted this morning that he will only transfer power if a challenger beats him in a one-on-one spear fight.

Trump refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, saying the only way to dethrone him would be for a challenger to beat him in ritual combat, per Wakandan tradition. The winner of the fight will receive the presidency and a cool suit that grants him super strength to go around the world and punch commies and stuff.

"It will not be a peaceful transfer of power," Trump said. "It will instead be a fun, entertaining transfer of power, and that's much more important. We can gather together all the tribal people and they can chant and bang their spears down and stuff. Totally tremendous and remarkable event. Really spectacular."

Biden then wandered up to Trump and said he'd challenge the president to a push-up contest. "I don't even know who you are," Trump growled.

"Yeah, me neither," Biden replied, wandering away again.

In paperwork filed by his lawyer, Hunter says: "I attest that I am unemployed and have had no monthly income since May 2019." He adds he has "significant debts" from his 2017 divorce.

He also said he didn’t want to fly from his home in LA to Arkansas to give evidence as it would put him and his new young family at risk of catching Covid-19.

The baby’s mom Lunden Roberts, 29, was reportedly working as a stripper when she and Hunter, 50, met in Washington D.C. She was also a college student and former women's basketball star.

4 wounded in knife attack in Paris, suspect arrested

Paris police say they have arrested a man suspected of a knife attack that wounded four people near the former offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo

PARIS – Paris police say a suspect believed to have wounded four people in a knife attack near the former offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo has been arrested.

A Paris police official said that while authorities initially thought two attackers were involved, they now believe it was only one person, who was detained near the Bastille plaza in eastern Paris.

It is unclear what motivated the attack Friday or whether it had any link to Charlie Hebdo, which moved offices after they were attacked by Islamic extremists in 2015.

PARIS (AP) — Four people were wounded in a knife attack Friday near the former offices of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in Paris, and two assailants are on the run, police said.

Associated Press reporters at the scene saw police flooding into the neighborhood in eastern Paris, near the Richard Lenoir subway station.

Police are “actively hunting” for the perpetrators and have cordoned off the area including the former Charlie Hebdo offices after a suspect package was noticed nearby, according to a police offical.

The motive for the attack is unclear, and it is not clear whether it is linked to Charlie Hebdo, which moved its activities out of the area after Islamic extremists attacked its editorial offices in 2015, killing 12 people.

Police did not release the identities of the attackers or the wounded, who include two people in “absolutely urgent” condition, the official said. The official was not authorized to be publicly named.

Prime Minister Jean Castex cut short a visit to a suburb north of Paris to head to the Interior Ministry to follow developments.

The trial in the Charlie Hebdo attacks is currently underway across town. Murmurs broke at the terrorism trial of 14 people, including 3 fugitives, accused of helping the attackers in the January 2015 killings, as the news filtered through. The widows of the Charlie Hebdo attackers are scheduled to testify Friday afternoon.

Andrew Cuomo’s guest appearance in the Hunter Biden scandals

New Yorkers should take special note of one part of the Senate report on Hunter Biden’s shady business dealings — because one of his wealthy patrons got “economic development” tax breaks from our own Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

Yes, the main implications are national: Hunter got millions from foreign sources while his dad was veep, and though Obama officials feared conflicts, they did nothing. Records “show potential criminal activity between Hunter Biden, his family and his associates” and Ukrainian, Russian, Kazakh and Chinese nationals, the report says.

And the younger Biden sent “thousands” to folks who’ve been tied to “transactions consistent with human trafficking” or have possible associations with the porn industry or prostitution. Ugly stuff.

Yet New Yorkers may care most about the section noting that Hunter’s firm, Rosemont Seneca Thornton, got $242,000 from Russian billionaire Elena Baturina, which it transferred to BAK USA — a Buffalo firm that raked in a quarter-million in tax breaks under Cuomo’s START-UP NY scheme — and then went belly up.

Rosemont, the report adds, got another $3.5 million from Baturina for unspecified “consulting,” but it’s not clear why Biden’s firm was in the middle of payments from her to BAK; New Yorkers can only wonder if Hunter profited off a deal made possible by their tax dollars.

More important, though, BAK is yet another example of Cuomo’s failed AndyLand approach to upstate’s economy: He picks winners (or at least politically connected firms) and showers them with public funds — in the hope they’ll survive and grow jobs. Alas, many deals have simply flopped.

Like the $90 million one with bulb-maker Soraa, for starters. And the $15 million “film hub” that sold for $1. And, of course, Tesla’s troubled $750 million Buffalo plant . . .

Indeed, the deals led to more corruption than jobs. Hmm: Maybe that’s a clue to why a Biden was involved with one of them.
