Anon remembers watching the Apollo program on TV as a kid. That was what they reported about the risks of getting the flight path right on the way back from the moon. Too shallow a re-entry angle and the capsule would skip like a stone on water and fly back out into space. the astronauts would be lost because no propulsion/fuel left to come back.
