Hundreds of US companies join Tesla to challenge Trump’s trade war tariffs – media

Lawsuits against the Trump administration have piled up over the last fortnight as some 3,500 American firms, including auto majors, retailers and pharmacies, were reported to challenge US tariffs on billions of Chinese goods.

The suits, filed by a wide range of companies in the US Court of International Trade in New York, seek to declare unlawful the latest rounds of levies on Chinese products imposed by Washington amid a wider trade dispute with Beijing. According to a Reuters report citing the filings, they name the US trade representative, Robert Lighthizer, and the Customs and Border Protection agency as defendants.

The future is now: Moscow’s big brother facial recognition technology to be expanded to ten other Russian cities

Russia will introduce Moscow’s controversial facial recognition camera system to ten other cities around the country. The installation cost in each municipality is estimated to be between 100-110 million rubles ($1.2-$1.4mn).

According to newspaper Kommersant, Russian company NtechLab, a partner of Moscow’s IT Department, is launching pilot projects in 10 of the country’s regional centers. For example, it will install 3,000 cameras in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia’s sixth biggest city. The company refused to name the other nine, in order not to disrupt future negotiations.

In Nizhny Novgorod, cameras will be installed at bus stops, public spaces, and building intercoms. Located in European Russia, the city is about 400km east of Moscow, and less than a four-hour train ride away.

“Some of them will begin working before the end of 2020,” Alexander Kabakov, co-founder of NtechLab, said. “More than 350 bus stops will have four cameras, and two or three of them will have a face recognition function.”

In the future, the tech will be use to predict congestion and flow of public transport.

Moscow has one of the most extensive and sophisticated surveillance systems in the world. Launched in 2017, it has over 193,000 cameras installed around the city. In April, Moscow’s facial recognition system made international headlines after being used to catch residents leaving their apartment during the Covid-19 lockdown.

Despite the all-seeing nature of facial recognition technology, a survey of Moscow residents this summer discovered that 47 percent of the city supports the system, explaining that they help to combat crime (70 percent). The city’s surveillance is set to grow further, with 1.4 billion rubles ($20 million) allocated for equipping the city’s metro trains with cameras.

Governor of Oregon Kate Brown has ended up declaring a state of emergency in the city of Portland on Friday, ahead of a rally held by a right-wing group known as the Proud Boys, Fox News reports.

According to the media outlet, this decision was made as members of the Proud Boys plan to gather at a downtown park Saturday, "potentially setting the stage for confrontations with counterprotesters".

According to a new disclosure by the Federal Reserve, Harley-Davidson was given a previously secret $2.3 billion bailout during the fall of 2008 and winter of 2009. We’ve previously reported that Harley borrowed nearly $1 billion in emergency operating capital from Warren Buffett at 15 percent interest during the same period and has since upped that amount to nearly $2 billion from other lenders. The disclosure of this emergency aid by the Fed gives a new indication as to just how close Harley was to the brink during the darkest days of the financial crisis and a new indication of how much American taxpayers spent to keep it open.
