Thomas Juby, a retired RCMP sergeant who was not working for the TSB, and with no air accident investigation experience, has gained notoriety and profit from promoting a theory that a thermite bomb was planted on the flight, possibly to murder one or more passengers. Juby's suspicions were corroborated by a senior researcher working for a Canadian government lab that found magnesium levels ten times higher than would be normally expected in the wiring harness remains.[30] Juby claimed that suspicious levels of magnesium and other elements associated with arson were discovered in the wiring and that he was ordered to remove references to magnesium or a suspected incendiary device from his investigative notes.
