A passenger on board Southwest Flight 1380, which was headed from New York to Dallas, tells CNN that the plane was diverted to Philadelphia when the aircraft’s left side engine was lost.

"We left LaGuardia [on SWA 1380] heading to Dallas and we were west of Philly when we lost the left side engine and diverted to Philly," the passenger said.

"Shrapnel hit the window causing a serious injury; no other details about that, several medical personal on the flight tended to the injured passenger," they added.

Passengers aboard a Dallas-bound Southwest Airlines flight Tuesday heard an explosion before seeing oxygen masks drop from the ceiling and a woman sucked toward a broken window in the plane, a witness said.

One person died in the incident, the airline said.

"The entire Southwest Airlines Family is devastated and extends its deepest, heartfelt sympathy to the customers, employees, family members and loved ones affected by this tragic event," the airline said.

Southwest CEO Gary Kelly said in a video statement that the family of the victim was the airline's primary concern.

"Everybody was going crazy, and yelling and screaming," passenger Marty Martinez said of the flight, which left New York and was forced to make an emergency landing in Philadelphia.

"As the plane is going down, I am literally purchasing internet just so I can get some kind of communication to the outside world," he said.

Passenger Matt Tranchin told CNN affiliate WPVI he was thinking, "That I'll never live to see my son born. That I'll never be able to say goodbye to my wife, say goodbye to parents. But I am. I am. I feel really very fortunate for that."

Tranchin told WPVI the crew was frantically trying to plug a hole left when a window shattered.

"Flight attendants rushed up. There was momentary chaos. Everyone kind of descended on where this hole was," he said.

The plane had suffered damage to one of its engines, and according to passenger Kristopher Johnson, who was sitting near the front of Flight 1380, debris from the engine flew into the window, breaking it and injuring a woman sitting nearby.

I didn't see any people screaming or crying during the videos of the in flight experience. Everyone was calm and cool and collected.

President Trump told reporters the US has started direct talks with North Korea "at extremely high levels."

"We've also started talking to North Korea directly," Trump said. "We have had direct talks at very high levels, extremely high levels with North Korea. And I really believe there's a lot of good will, a lot of good things are happening. We'll see what happens, as I always say, we'll see what happens. And because ultimately it is the end result that counts, not the fact that we're thinking about having a meeting or having a meeting."

His comment came during an expanded bilateral meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Abe.

I fly southwest all the time. There are no designated seats. it's only, A group, B group and C group. A group is like 1-29…they board first (mostly business people/children with no parents/or disabled and elderly)

B group goes next, they are like 29-49

then C group..the rest of the people board the plane.
