Military suicides up as much as 20% in COVID era

WASHINGTON — Military suicides have increased by as much as 20 percent this year compared to the same period in 2019, and some incidents of violent behavior have spiked as service members struggle under COVID-19, war-zone deployments, national disasters and civil unrest.

While the data is incomplete and causes of suicide are complex, Army and Air Force officials say they believe the pandemic is adding stress to an already strained force.

And senior Army leaders — who say they’ve seen about a 30 precent jump in active duty suicides so far this year — told The Associated Press that they are looking at shortening combat deployments. Such a move would be part of a broader effort to make the wellbeing of soldiers and their families the Army’s top priority, overtaking combat readiness and weapons modernization.

The Pentagon refused to provide 2020 data or discuss the issue, but Army officials said discussions in Defense Department briefings indicate there has been roughly a 20 percent jump in overall military suicides this year. The numbers vary by service. The active Army’s 30 percent spike — from 88 last year to 114 this year — pushes the total up because it’s the largest service. The Army Guard is up about 10 percent, going from 78 last year to 86 this year. The Navy total is believed to be lower this year.

Army leaders say they can’t directly pin the increase on the virus, but the timing coincides.

“I can’t say scientifically, but what I can say is — I can read a chart and a graph, and the numbers have gone up in behavioral health related issues,” Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said in an AP interview.

Pointing to increases in Army suicides, murders and other violent behavior, he added, “We cannot say definitively it is because of COVID. But there is a direct correlation from when COVID started, the numbers actually went up.”

Trump, Pentagon collide over anti-diversity training push

President Trump's efforts to appeal to his conservative base by banning certain diversity training is butting up against the Pentagon’s efforts to build a more inclusive military.

The conflict has been prominent this week, as Trump signed an executive order that extended his administration's ban on training involving race- and sex-based discrimination to include the military, federal contractors and grant recipients.

Days later, top Pentagon officials were extolling the virtues of diversity to service members at a virtual town hall and touting the department’s efforts to fight racial bias.

It’s unclear exactly what effect Trump’s order will have on the military’s plans to address racism and discrimination in the ranks, but the messaging coming from the White House and the Pentagon stand in stark contrast to one another.

“The president of the United States is sending the message that training around racial equity and gender equity is something that he devalues,” said Shannon Minter, legal director at the National Center for Lesbian Rights, which is leading a lawsuit against Trump’s transgender military ban.

Trump and Pentagon officials have been at odds for months about how to respond to nationwide protests against racial injustices.

Pentagon officials initially came under sharp criticism for their handling of the protests after Defense Secretary Mark Esper and chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mark Milley accompanied Trump to a photo op at church across from the White House that happened after federal law enforcement forcibly cleared the area of peaceful protesters.

But since then, the department has worked to grapple with its own racial disparities and restore public trust, including by both men expressing regret for their role in Trump’s photo-op.

In June, after Trump threatened to send active-duty troops into cities to quell the protests, Esper held a news conference at the Pentagon announcing his opposition to the idea.

Defense officials have also come out in support of renaming military bases that are named after Confederate leaders, something Trump has adamantly refused to do.

Esper has also announced a series of initiatives aimed at improving inclusion and diversity. In July, he issued a memo that, among other things, called for the department to “develop educational requirements for implementation across the military lifecycle to educate the force on unconscious bias.”

Texas Residents Warned Their Drinking Water May Contain A "Brain-Eating Microbe"

Today in "news you definitely don't need to get in the middle of an already tumultuous 2020", some Texas residents are being told not to drink their water due to it potentially being tainted with a "brain-eating microbe".

An advisory was issued for Lake Jackson, Freeport, Angleton, Brazoria, Richwood, Oyster Creek, Clute and Rosenberg to not use water for anything other than flushing toilets, according to The Guardian.

This comes after the The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality warned of potential contamination of the water supply with Naegleria fowleri.

Naegleria fowleri is a microscopic amoeba that infects people when it enters the body through the nose. From there, it travels to the brain and can cause a "rare and debilitating disease" called primary amebic meningoencephalitis.

The infection is usually fatal and has been seen before in the past, notably in tap water in Southern Louisiana from 2011 to 2013. It was also found in an untreated geothermal well in Arizona in 2003.

The advisory affects 120,000 people in addition to Dow Chemical workers in Freeport and Clemens and Wayne Scott state prisons. It will remain in effect until the Brazosport Water Authority, where the contamination is thought to be, is thoroughly flushed and tested. The BWA pulls its water from the Brazos river.

In other news, who's ready to get 2021 started as soon as humanly possible?

France vows to protect its Jewish community after stabbing

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin visits a synagogue ahead of Yom Kippur, telling reporters over 7,000 police and soldiers will be protecting Jewish services over the weekend after Friday's attack outside former offices of Charlie Hebdo

France’s interior minister promised Sunday to protect France’s Jewish community from extremists after a double stabbing in Paris blamed on Islamic terrorism.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin visited a synagogue Sunday ahead of the evening start of Yom Kippur, the Jewish Day of Atonement, and said more than 7,000 police and soldiers are protecting Jewish services this weekend. France has Europe’s largest Jewish community.

“I came to assure … members of France’s Jewish community of the protection of the state,” Darmanin told reporters. “Because we know that Jews are particularly targeted by Islamist attacks and we should obviously protect them.”

Darmanin defended authorities’ handling of a double stabbing Friday outside the former offices of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, saying intelligence services have prevented 32 potential terrorist attacks over the past three years.

Coordinated Islamic extremist attacks on Charlie Hebdo’s Paris newsroom and a kosher supermarket in January 2015 killed 17 people, and Friday’s stabbing came as the trial into those attacks is under way.

Donald Trump Lays Out Evidence of Mail-In Voting Fraud to Reporters

President Donald Trump laid out the evidence of mail-in voter fraud for reporters at a White House press conference on Sunday.

“We are gravely concerned about the Democrat assault on election integrity,” Donald Trump said.

The president cited the following stories, questioning the integrity and stability of the mail-in voting process:

In Brooklyn, 25 percent of mail-in ballots were ruled invalid during the June Democrat primary.

In a New Jersey special election, nearly 20 percent of the ballots were thrown out, and four people are being prosecuted for fraud.

In a Florida primary, more than 35,000 mail-in ballots were rejected, and over 100,000 ballots were rejected in California.

In Pennsylvania’s primary, half of the counties were still counting ballots a week after the election.

The story of discarded military ballots discovered in Pennsylvania, many of them were cast for Trump.

Reports in Wisconsin of three trays of mail containing absentee ballots were found in a ditch.

In North Carolina, voters reported receiving two ballots in the mail.

The president also revisited the disastrous results of the 2020 Democrat Iowa caucuses.

“They still don’t really know who the winner is,” Trump said, referring to Iowa. “I think they called somebody eventually but it was many, many, weeks later.”

The president questioned whether Democrats should be meddling with how elections were being held in other states.

“They can’t run a simple caucus, yet now they’re trying to dramatically write election laws nationwide just weeks before an election,” Trump said.

The president argued that voters should still be able to vote in person in November.

“There is no justification for these extreme changes to the election law,” Trump said, noting that if people could go to the grocery store with their photo ID, they should be able to vote in person.
