Geomagnetic storm to bring possible aurora borealis sightings to western Washington
A Geomagnetic Storm Watch has been issued for western Washington by the National Weather Service which means there is a greater likelihood of seeing the northern lights in our region over the next few nights.
While our local weather may be entering a quiet period, the weather on the surface of the sun is showing signs of becoming quite active. Geomagnetic storms will be increasingly more likely in the days to come, especially on Monday, which will only help to enhance our viewing of the aurora borealis.

If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.

Hypersonic Vehicles With Lasers Could Unlock Unprecedented Speeds
For decades, the DoD has been researching a radical drag reduction technique that involves sheathing a vehicle in directed energy-induced plasma.
Over the last decade, two of the most significant topics in defense research and development have been directed energy systems and hypersonic weapons. The Department of Defense and its major contractors have been pushing the boundaries of what is possible with these technologies and those efforts could someday soon literally change the face of warfare forever.
As it turns out, these two cutting edge areas of defense research are beginning to converge in laboratories with the goal of enabling unprecedented levels of speed for aerial weapons. By combining advanced directed energy technology with the latest in hypersonic vehicle design, researchers in private and Department of Defense (DoD) funded laboratories have laid the groundwork for systems designed to literally sheathe an entire vehicle in laser and/or microwave-induced plasma in order to drastically reduce drag. If successfully developed, this concept may someday lead to new frontiers in speed and radical new forms of aerodynamic control and aircraft design.

Real-life Inception as scientists figure out how to plant ideas in dreams
Researchers at MIT have been testing a fascinating new technique called targeted dream incubation, which allows them to insert certain topics into someone else's dreams
Researchers at MIT Media Lab's Fluid Interfaces have been testing a new technique called targeted dream incubation (TDI), which allows them to insert certain topics into someone's dreams.
Past studies have shown that when sleepers enter a rare dream state known as lucid dreaming, they gain awareness that they're dreaming and can thus have some control over what happens in their mind.
TDI achieves a similar result by targeting people during hypnagogia, a semi-lucid dream state that occurs as someone is falling asleep.
At this moment scientists introduced "targeted information" to the subjects of a study, the results of which were published in the August issue of the journal Consciousness and Cognition.
The study involved 25 participants taking daytime naps. Before going to bed they would record audio prompts in an app such as "remember to think of a tree" and "remember to observe your thoughts".
They wore hand-mounted Dormio sleep trackers to monitor their heart rate and detect when they entered hypnagogia, at which point they were most "open to influence from outside audio cues", said lead study author Adam Haar Horowitz.

Google Shows Huge Panic Attack Rise During COVID
Researchers found a major jump in searches related to anxiety, panic attacks, and treatments for panic attacks, especially remote and self-care techniques.
Based on a Google Trends analysis, psychologists have discovered a major jump in searches related to anxiety, panic attacks, and treatments for panic attacks.
The researchers used Google search data to examine trends in mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic, and based on that search, say panic attacks could be affecting millions.
They used Google Trends to analyze an extensive list of mental health-related terms that people searched for before and after the World Health Organization issued a pandemic declaration on March 11, 2020. They found a major jump in searches related to anxiety, panic attacks, and treatments for panic attacks, especially remote and self-care techniques, in the weeks following the pandemic declaration.

According to the European Space Agency, on September 22, this 'meteor' was seen falling over Germany and the Netherlands, before it "bounced back into space".
"A rock from space was recently observed skimming Earthโs atmosphere. The meteoroid was spotted in the early hours of 22 September above Northern Germany and the Netherlands, getting as low as 91 km in altitude - far below any orbiting satellites - before it โbouncedโ back into space."
