'Locked safes, lost keys': Richard Grenell details 'crazy' excuses about classified reports
Former Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell said on Monday that officials make up "crazy" excuses not to release classified reports. Fox News host Sean Hannity alluded to Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham saying over the weekend that "more damning" information about the Russia investigation will soon be released to the public and asked Grenell if he had any idea what is in store. "We’ve heard every excuse in the book about why these reports aren't coming out: locked safes, lost keys, all sorts of crazy stuff," Grenell said as he called for further transparency. Critics of such declassifications have also warned about putting sources and methods at risk.
Grenell served as President Trump's acting spy chief from Feb. 20 to May 26, overseeing the 17-member U.S. intelligence community, and declassified some material related to the Russia investigation in which allies of the president claim he and his associates were unfairly targeted. Grenell also was the U.S. ambassador to Germany and remains as the special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations. "From the beginning," Grenell told Hannity, intelligence officials raised concerns about British ex-spy Christopher Steele's anti-Trump dossier, which the FBI used in its investigation looking into links between Trump's 2016 campaign and Russia, but were "silenced" by agency leaders. "There’s a whole group of people in Washington that doesn’t want the public to read these because they don’t trust the public," Grenell said. "They like to spoon-feed the public only certain information. But we are getting to the point where the public is demanding these. I encourage everybody to keep talking about these things. I don’t care if it’s the day before the election or the day after the election. People need to be held accountable. We’ve got a whole bunch of more information that needs to come out. Transparency is not political." U.S. Attorney John Durham is conducting a criminal inquiry into the Russia investigation, but Fox Business anchor Maria Bartiromo reported over the weekend he will likely not release an interim report before the Nov. 3 election.
