I'm getting the suspicion that Trump had no intention of following the traditional debate format, knowing that it's a sham: a shell of its former glory, where perhaps at one point it actually mattered and had substance.

 

We've known for a long time that the game is rigged, and what's going on is but microns away from being a complete farce. So his approach to the "debate" was more of a tactical - if not cynical one.
